OT: Mac me |
Fed up with the PC, moved over to the Mac. This is going to take some
getting used to. I downloaded Thunderbird, using that as a newsreader.
It's kind of like Outlook Express. I already miss Xnews. Is there
anything out there (free) for Mac that is like Xnews or Free Agent?

I've used MT-Newswatcher for years now. I tried Thunderbird, but while
it is a decent mail program, it leaves a lot to be desired as a
newsreader. You can download MT-Newswatcher from:
http://www.smfr.org/mtnw/
I'd try it. It's free.

Here's another vote for MT-Newswatcher. I've been a Mac user for years
and have been using the various iterations of Newswatcher for virtually
all of that time. I have no experience with Thoth so can't comment on
that software.
Enjoy your new machine.

Actually, I'm getting kind of attached to Thunderbird now. I got it to
sort by date and thread everything at the same time. It doesn't have
the filtering capability of Xnews, which I shall dearly miss. I'll give
MT a shot, though. Thanks!

I have to say go with Thoth or MT-Newswatcher. Thoth is, like a lot of
Mac software, remarkably simple and straightforward to use. It is
rock-solid stable, and almost never crashes. It is also the newsreader
of choice of the gurus in the Mac binaries groups. I evaluated Mac
Thunderbird to see if it might be suitable for a friend with a PC, and
while it is a great e-mail program, it is horrendously slow and
convoluted for Usenet, and I gave up on it. A dedicated newsreader
works better than the hybrids. I have also used Agent with Virtual PC
(PC emulation program for Mac) and found it counter-intuitive and
difficult to use compared to Thoth. I have a friend who recently got a
Mac and after setting up Thoth for her I was able to show her how to
use it in two minutes, tops. When she had a PC, she just couldn't grasp
Agent for her life.
Also, to make your Mac life easier, I would recommend some of the
following basic programs, depending on your needs:
Application Switcher:
Must have alternative to the "Dock" that gives you a menu with little
buttons you can hide in the corner somewhere and which allows you to
quickly switch between open applications, quit open applications
without selecting them, quit all applications at once, hide
applications that you're not currently using and a few other functions
that OS 9 was able to do but which were abandoned in OS X. I'd go nuts
without it, as the Dock simply sucks, big time.
USB Overdrive:
Mouse driver software which is a necessity to run the programmable
mouse you will need to buy to replace that piece of ***** Apple gave you
(Your old PC mouse might work with it).
CD Finder:
Disk cataloguing utility which helps you keep track of what's on all
your CDs and DVDs. You can use it to catalogue your PC stuff, as well.
Tex-Edit: Text editor which is useful for cleaning up the crappy text
you get from web-pages, etc.
VLC:
Movie-viewing program which enables you to view Divx and Xvid movies as
well as DVDs on Mac.
Toast Titanium:
Must have CD and DVD burner software.
With the exception of Toast all this stuff can be found at:

I had Thoth, but I found it cumbersome. I'm using it to write this

some interesting filters I'll have to look into.

The filters are very powerful. Try this one on for size:
Select one of your posts within the group and choose "News--->New
Filter"
Change "Subject" to "From" It should say "Uncle Vic"
Where it says "Score as" put 500 (highest priority)
Where it says "For" at the top, you can keep it as alt.atheism or set
it to "." (minus the quotes) to make it global for all groups.
Hit "OK"
Now from the alt.atheism window go to View--->Refilter and every one of
your posts, as well as every thread containing one of your posts,
should be labeled red (by default) and sorted to the top. If not, go to
Preferences--->Article Lists and select "sort Highest priority to top."
You can do this for every poster you like on the group, setting their
priority slightly lower than yours so they sort just below your posts,
and you can alternate the colors.
This way you no longer have to fish for your own posts or threads
you're on.

Definitely get USB overdrive for your trackball. Logitech makes great
mice, but their Mac driver blows. You will have to uninstall Logitech's
drivers first, but USB Overdrive let's you set custom key configs for
different applications, whereas Logitech only let's you set one
configuration for all apps.

Very cool. Couple of questions. I changed the screen colors, but the
screen fonts I chose won't hold. It keeps going back to the very tiny
Geneva 10, which I have a difficult time reading.
Also, how do you refresh the group and retrieve new articles? AA gets
a lot of traffic, over 100 posts per hour. "Check for new articles"
(News menu) is always grayed out. Also, I can't seem to subscribe to
AA. Every time I open the program I have to pick it out of the full
newsgroup list. I must be doing something wrong.
Thoth is not as user friendly as Thunderbird, but that filter trick has
made it a contender.

Thoth is not as user friendly as Thunderbird, but that filter trick has
made it a contender.
In oder to use the "Check for new articles" command, you have to be
subscribed to the group. This command doesn't work when opening groups
through the "Full Newsgroup List." To subscribe to the group, you first
have to create a new group list which will later contain all your
subscribed groups. Detailed instructions on how to do this are listed
under "Subscribing to Newsgroups" in the Thoth "User Guide."
The process is:
1). Select Edit--->News Server Settings and choose your newsserver from
the pull down menu
2). Where is says "Topic" select "Group Lists"
3). Hit "Add New" and call it whatever you like (Say Uncle Vic's list).
I would keep the default settings.
4). You should now see a little window titled "Uncle Vic's list" or
whatever you called it. To subscribe to individual groups, you just
identify each one in the main group window, and drag and drop each one
into this window. This will be your list of subscribed groups, and
using the default settings, this window should open up whenever you
open Thoth. You can have more than one such list.
5). To "check for new articles," you have to select the group in "Uncle
Vic's" and then issue that command (Command Y). This should give you
updated articles, though in truth I never subscribe to groups, for the
reason that once you've read an article in a subscribed group, the next
time you launch Thoth, that article won't be visible anymore. You may
like it that way, so you don't have to see everything you've already
read, but I prefer to always maintain the context in threads. All
articles are always available when you open the group through the full
group list. If you wish to always see a particular article, you can
mark it unread before you quit Thoth, or you can mark it as "Kept"
(News--->Mark kept) and Thoth will keep a copy of the article in a
special cache. If you don't wish to cache the full text of the article,
Thoth can just cache the headers. To do this, go to
Preferences--->Article Lists--->Keep Headers Only. See "Marking
Articles Kept and Unkept" in the User Guide
6). Alternately, if you don't wish to keep articles or their headers,
but wish to see previous posts in a thread that you've already read and
which are therefore no longer visible, the User Guide says: "When
reading an article the ³Open Last Reference² or ³Open All References²
commands may be used to open the subthread of articles preceding the
one you're reading (if they're still available from the news server)."
Hope this makes sense.

Mucho thanks. I may just do what you do, it's easy enough to open from
the main listing. As far as setting up killfiles, it seems to use the
same kind of score system as Xnews. I know 500 is the top, or featured
score, but is zero the botttom, or "killed"? I remember seeing some
negative unmbers in there somewhere.
Like xnews, this is taking some time to get used to. But all good
things take time...

OK, I solved the screen fonts thing. I still can't refresh the group
without closing the program and re-opening it. And I have a new
problem. My "Uncle Vic" personality seems to have adopted an identity
of its own, which it seems to have nicked from another poster. It's an
E-mail ID that reads "nobody@home.com" which of course does not show up
in the filtering. When I edit the personality, I can't find the field
that contains the errant e-mail ID.
Maybe it will fix itself in the morning. <yawn>

Also, if you want, I can send you some screen caps I have of my
preference settings (under 1mb file), which will among other things
eliminate the problem of Thoth displaying articles in Threads with each
article indented, and also allow Thoth to sort articles by date
properly within threads. You'll have to copy my settings exactly, and
when you're done set the little arrow on the far upper left corner of
any open group window downward. Sorry if some of the settings are
irrelevant, but I've forgotten what does what which is why I have the
screen caps. It would be too lengthy for me to describe why you should
do this, but trust me it works to overcome one of the program's little
quirks with regards to displaying articles in proper order. If the
changes don't suit you you can always reset everything to default. (And
don't worry about asking any questions as I am preparing all this info
for my chronic pain support group anyway, and your questions are
helping me identify things I will need to explain.)

Generally, Thoth has two kinds of personalities. The "default"
personality and whatever extra personalities you create for yourself.
Whenever you make a "New Posting" (Command N) your default personality
is selected by, well, default, and it it is labeled "none." Granted
this is a bit confusing. To change your default personality, go to
Preferences--->Messages and whatever it has for your full name and
e-mail address, that's your default personality. Since I am seeing
posts from Uncle Vic <nobody@home.net> this may be what Thoth adds in
if you don't put something in there or this is what you put in there at
some point.

Open Office, of which I use OO much more often. About once a month for OO,
about once a year, by accident, for Text Edit.)
I usually don't use it for word processing, but for cleaning up and
saving text that i am interested in off the Internet. Sometimes Apple's
Text Edit works better for opening and viewing some .doc files from
Windoze, so I use both. Another nice little utility is "Fishpad" which
is a basic free "note pad" program replacing the old OS 9 notepad for
jotting down the occasional pithy quote from alt.atheism. A more high
powered Notepad program is NotePad Deluxe, which allows you save some
of your stuff such as serial numbers, credit card info or whatever and
then encrypt the pages you want to keep hidden while allowing you easy
access to the stuff that doesn't need to be encrypted.

It is not free, but I love my HogWasher. From Asar Corporation, it cost me
$35 several years ago, been updated a number of times and works perfectly
with Mac OSX 10.4.6. There are several free versions, MTNewsreader is one I
tried a few years ago, but HW won me over well enough that I happily paid the
price.

I saw that one, it looks interesting. I'm kinda getting the hang of
this Thunderbird thing, but I have to keep going back and forth between
the dated list and the messages list in order to keep up with the latest
threads. Even then I can't tell who is responding to whom without
opening the post.
