OT: Mail Server Software. |
You people know things, or should that be "we" people. So I thought
I'd ask... because I don't know this!
I currently run my own mailserver over a 10mbit cable Internet
connection using TZO (dynamic DNS Service) for my, erm, DNS
destination.
It's an unholy combination of Trend Interscan and WinRoute (the old
one with the pop/smtp mail server). This is on NT4 Service Pack 6
which runs on a Pentium 1, 166 Mhz with no problem at all.
Anyway, for various reasons I'm upgrading my server to Win 2003
Advanced Server on a new custom box, and would really like an all in
one mailserver solution with virus scanning, forwarding by DNS lookup
or to a default SMTP forwarder, and so forth. Alas my buget for this
is in the region of 0.01 - 300 pounds.
Your suggestions are welcome!
Thanks In Advance,
TW.

Hi Therion
Windows 2003 Server SP1 has POP3/SMTP/News built into it as apart of
IIS (just don't install the web server portion in the add/remove
components section). Just configure POP3/SMTP to drop the mail in some
folders on the local disk as your mail store, make sure you have your
CNAME, MX and A records in DNS, install a virus checker on the Win2k3
server and you are done.
Setup the virus checker to run active scans on the folders where the
mail store is held.
For free virus checkers that run active scans there are ClamWin
(clamwin.sourceforge.net) and AVG (can't remember website ;))
All for "free", not considering the weekend configuring and playing
with.

Well, then you'll have POP/SMTP already.

Plenty of mailservers to be found, some of them free, others for very
little money. Google a bit around, and you find what you want.
I work a lot with 602Pro. Does everything you require, so have a look
at that.
Another might be Mercury. Much more difficult to set up and configure,
but fee.

Linux....there is a MASSIVE amount of software/support/knowledge, plus you
won't be locked into a proprietary system, PLUS it is all FREE!!!
You DO have to invest a certain amount of intellectual sweat to enter the
Linux mindset, but it is effort well spent.
Whatever type of server you need: smtp, pop, imap, dns, dhcp, etc, etc,
there is a high quality, open source implementation on the Linux platform,
that will run well on modest hardware.
I can understand why some people would be reluctant to adopt Linux for the
desktop, but for a server???? Why is it even a question?

Linux is kinda overkill for a person that wants a screw around a home
mail server. While linux sendmail is pretty neat, it is a royal pain
in the ***** to configure even with the sexy web front end. Don't even
get me started with BINDS DNS. We're still having some wicked issues
with it because of PKI.

Massive support.... try posting anything that is NOT shouting the
sheer joys of Linux in a newsgroup. You'll lucky if you get out alive.

I would've mentioned Postfix but you said "Windows" so I'm out...

Pick the right options in the server management wizard and install AVG
antivirus from grisoft.com. It's not free but it is cheap. Job done.
