Hearts and minds
What is this thing called love? Poetry, biology, or the essence of
being alive?

Brokeback Mountain is inevitably called a gay cowboy movie. Ang Lee's
film of what happened when two guys fell in love during the summer of
1963 while tending sheep in homophobic Wyoming was bound to get that
label. This is a shame. It detracts from what I take to be a core
theme, namely that these men did not expect to fall in love. In Annie
Proulx's short story upon which the film is based the suggestion is
that they are bewitched by the mountain itself. It is not as if they
would have gone to a gay bar looking for a good time if it weren't for
the fact that they had to eke out a living on harsh high pastures.
