Also we, Europe, have not done a Mars mission before and
the other European craft that have left Earth orbit have
been successful (from memory, the two German Helios
craft, the British built Giotto and I think Ulysses was
German built) so the words 'this time' don't seem to
serve any purpose.
It was meant as a general "this attempt to land on Mars" rather than
anything directly aimed at the European space mission.
