life of the Caribbean-born nurse Mary Seacole. It traces her footsteps
from her birthplace, Jamaica, to Victorian England and on to the
Crimea, where she became famous for her pioneering work in caring for
British troops. The programme examines the nature of her 'miraculous'
remedies and reveals why they were so effective. It also explores the
dark days that followed Seacole's return to London, impoverished and
alone. It then charts her resurgence, when the very soldiers whose
lives she had saved rallied around to rescue her. Why was Mary Seacole,
a woman of such prominence during her lifetime, so swiftly forgotten
after her death?
