OT: Mead |
Someone gave me a bottle of mead to drink, and I confess I've never
tried it before. What can I expect?
It came with a packet of "mulling spices." What are mulling spices and
how do I use them?
Do I drink this stuff cold, room temp, warm, hot?
Any help appreciated. If you can make it here by dinnertime, I might
even share.

No clue. The only time I use mulling spices is when we heat up a big pot of
apple cider with a bottle of Captain Morgan's spiced rum thrown in it.

I love mead! The first botte I ever got was from the Tower of London.
I've found that Irish mead is a lot stronger, but pretty good
nonetheless.
Now, of the American makers, the best I've heard of is Chaucer's. That's
damn good stuff. Tastes strongly of honey.
I've always had it at room temperature, and I've never tried it with the
mulling spices. I just drink it straight. But I'd imagine that heated,
with a little of the spice added, probably would be damn good for a
winter treat.
Enjoy!

It does, of course, vary with the mead though, hence the difficulty
explaining over the net. Some meads can, to add to the confusion,
easily be mulled with no spices, especially if heather honey is used in
the recipe. Then there's metheglins etc...
Best advice is to the ask the person who gave the mead

Fermented honey.

Mulling spices. If you add them then you'll want to heat the mead.
Do I drink this stuff cold, room temp, warm, hot?
Room temp works for me.
Any help appreciated. If you can make it here by dinnertime, I might

Well, honey wine, because that's what mead is. :)
Most mead commercially available (at least over here in Germany) is very
sweet - probably the makers think that if it's made from honey it must be
sweet. There are those who don't like that. I make my own (somewhat dry)
mead from time to time, that's a nice contrast.
Also, mead can be quite strong. Mine commonly has about 14-15 % alcohol.
Don't know about yours :)

No idea here...

I've heard it said that one should always chill sweet mead, but I think it's
all a matter of personal taste. Try it out and see what temperature you
like best :)

Often mead was a drink given to newlyweds... it can be strong enough to
equate to moonshine. If it is commercially made, it will be much less
strong.

No idea here...
To mull a drink means to warm it, and a mull is a hot mixed drink
generally based on wine (usually red) and flavoured with herbs and
spices, such as mulled wine. (Wikipedia - just to be sure I was right)
Cider is often warmed as a winter drink also.
Do I drink this stuff cold, room temp, warm, hot?
Usually drunk at room temp.... but if mulled, drink it warm.

Uhm...not from a straight ferment it won't be. If distilled it could
be, but distilled mead is rarer than an honest fundy. Straight ferments
won't go above about 20%, and even that is exceptional. As for given to
newlyweds, that's because it is an aphrodisiac (probably, studies
suggest it, but it's exceedingly hard to do a controlled study in this,
and it's not exactly a strong one).
My own anecdotal experience is that mead does work as a mild
aphrodisiac.

Probably heat the mead ina sacuepan (do not let it boil) and add the
spices, one of the best things to have on a cold night

Hmmmm....there's another overdue project. I'll have to get 5-10
gallons going next week. Maybe we'll get our act together this spring
and make another batch of morat (awful lot of work collecting enough
mulberries).
At least it's readily available these days.....I remember some years
ago being quite pleased to be able to buy Chaucer's, but disappointed
that it was the only one I could find.

Typically I make melomels through the summer and meads in the winter,
with ginger and cinammon metheglins being intended for the winter, and
started in spring.
Local fruit is used in the melomels, and all the honey is local.
(Lincolnshire honey may be the best in the world for table meads. If
anyone ahs any better, please send me the products :p)
