OT: "Medium" TV show |
Did anyone see the TV show "Medium" that aired last night? I tried
watching it with my wife, who believes in that kind of stuff. I couldn't
get past all the "This show is based on REAL events, by a REAL psychic"
stuff. I was waiting for a disclaimer that points out that no psychic has
ever contributed information that helped solve a crime, and that most
police departments politely ignore their "advice."

It was probably like the disclaimer on the John Edwards *****
Circus....wedged in for 0.5 seconds at the end of the show.

It goes further than that.
If a psychic medium offered 'information' about a crime which was not
publically known, they would primarily be treated as a suspect rather than a
witness - how else would they have come by that information if they weren't
involved?
During major investigations, psychics are not ignored- they are eventually
checked out to make sure they weren't involved in the crime.
This can create a problem, because after the psychic has been interviewed to
eliminate them from enquieries, they then go around claiming they have
'helped the police'.
With the exception of one or two backward police forces in rural areas,
psychic mediums are normally treated by the police for what they are - con
merchants.

James Randy offered a 1 million dollar reward, to anyone who could prove
anything supernatural in a scientific observed setting.
This was in the 80's and is still open today.
Out of millions of these people throughout the world, not one person has
even so much as walk in the building to ask for information about the
reward.

Many have taken the Randi challenge, as well as inquiring about it,
but none have passed it so far.
Are you saying that nobody has actually physically walked into the
Randi Institute building on foot to inquire about the challenge?

I don't disagree, but the record man managed it, or could have.
Presumably others could as well, if they came up with something

Nobody has so far, and it's been decades. Randi's quite accomplished at
spotting how stuff if faked.
Which raises the question: if someone won the million would it be

It's arguable, though, of course, there is no single authority to say it's
so. Same as any other kind of science.
And if not, what's the point of the prize?
You ask what the point of a million bucks is? Hell, the hookers and booze
are reason enough!

Retirement is for those who lack the imagination to die in an entertaining

I don't disagree, but the record man managed it, or could have.
I'm not entirely sure what you mean on that.
Presumably others could as well, if they came up with something
sufficiently original.
Nobody has so far, and it's been decades. Randi's quite accomplished
at
spotting how stuff if faked.
I liked Randi's book, _Flim Flam_, especially the part
about how he used the services of stage magicians to
pick out weaknesses in parapsychology experiments.
Scientists were great at thinking up the experiments
and analyzing good data, but were usually easy to fool,
as most scientists simply don't have the mindset to look
for deliberate cheating by their experimental subjects.

It's the sort of thing they specialize in, after all.

Most scientists don't often deal with deliberate deceit. That's how we get
stories like the Harvard professor being taken in by a 419 scammer.

Since he's a magician himself, he knows all about the ways that
different tricks can be played, so his prize is not likely to be
taken or claimed by some dumb flim-flam man who thinks he can
out-smart Randi with some pseudo-scientific hogwash.

I wonder if that same sentiment applies to religion, and whether
religionists are more suspicious of their fellow-religionists than
scientists are of their fellow scientists?

Religionists are really good at spotting the flim-flam in *other*
religions; but they fail to see the same mechanisms operating in their
own religion.

I think they're quite good at seeing the same mechanisms in their own
religion. And even better at keeping others from seeing them.

It's like some weird blind spot or something.
