Putting George W. Bush's invasion and occupation to the test

May 27 - Right before the war in Iraq began last spring, a fellow
journalist dismissed my qualms about what would be required. "There
just aren't that many bad guys," he said. "It's not going to be that
hard" to take out Saddam. Then, presumably, on to Damascus … If the
last century taught us anything, it is surely that the power of evil
in the world can hardly be underestimated. A just war, as laid out by
Augustine and Aquinas, has to have a reasonable chance of success. And
even on that point, I had my doubts.
