In the summer of 2001, Michelle Kennedy published an essay on Salon.com
detailing her life as a waitress in a Maine tourist town, raising three
children under 6, while living out of her Subaru station wagon. This
eloquent disquisition on the vagaries of homelessness was rendered
particularly haunting by its back story: Kennedy had, not long before,
been a middle-class housewife. The last vestige of her former world, a
television set that had been a graduation gift, sat tucked in front of
the Subaru's passenger seat.
