A vivid reminder of the historic depth of American racism surfaced in
April when the United Methodist Church, at its national convention in
Denver, formally apologized to the Arapaho and Cheyenne Indian tribes
for the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864, which was planned and led against
a peaceful and unsuspecting Indian village by a Methodist lay preacher
and U.S. Cavalry officer, Col. John M. Chivington. Over 200 victims,
mostly women and children, were slaughtered in this unprovoked attack.
