OT: Murder |
The following question & answer appeared in the Daily Mail (London,
UK, slightly to the right of a person on the right...) paper today. I
thought it was quite interesting. I've OCR'd it, so there are probably
spelling errors.
As a side question, why do you think Americans are more likely to
murder each other than the British?
Anyway, on with the Q & A.
Q: IS it true you are more likely to be
murdered by your best friend than
anyone else? Are there any statistics
to back this up?
A: THE startling facts of the
relationship between a typical
murder victim and a friend or
acquaintance were put together by
Russell Ash in his book series. The
Top Ten Of Everything.
In 1999 Ash used Home Office
figures for 1995, and showed that of
583 murders in that year, there were
155 where the relationship to the
victim was as a male friend or
acquaintance. This was the highest
relationship. The second highest
figure, 144, was where the murderer
was a male stranger.
Most shockingly, for all the men
out there, is that the third position,
with 93, was taken by the wives,
ex-wives and girlfriends of the
victim. This compares with just 38
where the murderer was a
husband, ex-husband or boyfriend
of the victim.
In sharp contrast to the number
one position, the number five slot
is filled by the female friend or
acquaintance of a victim, with 36.
Number six was a son, with 32
murders; number seven was a
female stranger, with 25; while
number eight was a daughter,
with 21.
Ninth place was where the father
was the murderer, with 15. At
number ten the mother was the
kilter, with ten murders.
The remaining 14 murders were
by unspecified males and other
family members.
The largest single cause of
murder was by the use of a sharp
instrument of some kind, followed
by hitting or kicking, and then
strangulation or asphyxiation.
Chilling as these facts seem, the
reality is that we have very few
murders in the UK compared with
other societies.
Out of every 100,000 people in this
country, only around two people will
be murdered in a typical year. This
compares with eight in the U.S.,
almost 20 in Russia, 37 in Jamaica
and 154 in Honduras.

That's "overkill", surely ;-)
Better safe than sorry.

We've got more practice?

I have a question. I need some help.
Your question got me digging, and I'm frustrated as all get-out.
One of the issues I've seen raised a couple of times is that the UK
and US compile their data differently, so that in England, if three
people assault and kill one person, but no one is convicted, it's not
tallied in the "murder" category, because there wasn't an official
resolution of murder. In the US, a report of three people killing one
person would be compiled as three acts resulting in murder; three acts
of murder, one murder, irrespective of whether they ever caught the
guys or not.
Now, I don't know how much that matters, But I'd _like_ to know how
much that matters. I can find the hard numbers for the US --
population roughly 260 million, 15,517 murders in the US in 2000. I
can't find anything like "number of people who died at the hands of
others" in the UK, which is what I'm looking for, since clearly not
every murder is solved -- though I did finally manage to discover that
there are 59.5 million of you. I did find a number which teased me
with offering as a percentage of violent deaths, suicides -- but it
turns out they included accidental death with that total number.
Do you know where I can find actual numbers of people who died at the
hands of others, not inclusive of just plain accidental car wrecks or
something?

Well they do say practice makes perfect!

Good question. Probably the Home Office would be a good start. I shall
have a look and come back to you.
