OT: My injury |
I was on my way home from seeing a girl yesterday at about 10Pm, when I
started walking along a small roadside ridge about a half metre tall.
Completely sobre and in high spirits, I had no idea the roadsign had
been placed there yesterday and was at forehead level, and was
surprised that I hadn't seen it until after it made a gash in my head
the size of a Happenny at normal walking pace.
I may not post for a couple of days....owww.

"Paper stitches". I've never been injured before, except for a few small
cuts and bruises. I don't understand how it happened. I was walking, not
running, and the sign wasn't sharp, just metallic.
I banged by head, but just kept on walking, and it was 30 seconds before I
noticed blood running down my face. It hadn't occured to me that a 0.5mph
knock on the head could have gashed me - felt the dull pain of the bang,
noting else.
The injury had a name -- something like a "skin shift", "skin flint", or
"Massive coin-sized bruise surrounded by cut skin". Basically, it's as if
someone jabbed me with a sharpish rock.

Yes, wrong. A brisk walk is about 6 mph, a normal walk about 4 mph, an amble
about 3 mph and a gentle stroll about 2 mph. A jog is about 10 mph, a run 15
mph (4 minute mile), a sprint or dash 20mph and 100 meters world champion 25

An average jogger takes about 1 hour to a 10 kilometer (6 mile) running
race. (Jogging at 6 mph).
Elite athletes can complete the race in around 30 minutes. (Running at 12
mph)
Some world class runner will win the race in around 28 minutes.
Race walkers can achieve 6 mph and maybe even faster but most
people can't walk that fast. 4 mph is a very brisk walking pace. I would
guess
that most people walk at around 3 mph.

Oh my. Your encyclopedia must be ancient
BTW, it as the Deer Bot Fly.
Just in case you are interested; 800 mph, is about mach 1.25, in order to fly
at that speed, it would have to burn better than a pound of nectar, a minute.
I remember reading about the Deer Bot Fly, years ago in an old encyclopedia,
nineteen twenties vintage.
I looked it up, in the one I bought for the kids, and found a very interesting
article about the erroneous beasty, which explained in great detail why it could
not possibly fly so fast.
The same book also refuted the "Bumble Bees, can't fly", fallacy; Which, as it
happens, I had never even heard of, up to then.
The fastest insect is the dragon fly, with a top speed of about 36 mph.

I recently read the history of the deer-fly fallacy, but I don't remember
where. It turns out that the figure of 800 mph was a wild guess by
*someone*, that eventually got repeated enough times to be accepted as
true. One day, however, a physicist calculated how improbable that figure
was, and did some experiments of his own that came up with a much more
reasonable figure for deer fly flying speed. It was kind of a case study
in how myths get started, and how they can be refuted.

I was guessing very vaguely that 0.5 is the speed of a very brisk walk --
wrong?
Yes, wrong. A brisk walk is about 6 mph, a normal walk about 4 mph, an
amble about 3 mph and a gentle stroll about 2 mph. A jog is about 10
mph, a run 15 mph (4 minute mile), a sprint or dash 20mph and 100 meters
world champion 25 mph.
Yes, but a Deer fly can go 800 mph! Supposedly.
<spit> Pantywaists. Deer flies don't hold a candle when compared to
a bar fly...........

If you walk into anything immovable it will cause severe damage. 0.5 MPH - 0
in 0.01 seconds makes your head weigh more than 21 times what it normally
does.
A similar thing happened to me once whilst I was watching someone descend
from a train. I ended up with a peri-ocular haematoma ('a right shiner') as
a result of failure to notice a concrete pillar. Cherchez la femme, trouvez

Cherchez = "Expensive at," oui?

started walking along a small roadside ridge about a half metre tall.
Completely sobre and in high spirits, I had no idea the roadsign had

the size of a Happenny at normal walking pace.
I may not post for a couple of days....owww.
Ouch! Take care of yourself. Did you need stitches?
"Paper stitches". I've never been injured before, except for a few small
cuts and bruises. I don't understand how it happened. I was walking, not
running, and the sign wasn't sharp, just metallic.

Skin is like "Silly Putty:" if you stretch it slowly, it will "give." But
load it sharply, and it breaks. I see lots of people who "cut" themselves
on blunt objects, usually the forehead or chin, where there is lots of
nice, hard bone just under the skin....

Amateur! I once had a spider run across my foot, so I jumped up, bashed my
knee on a corner, spilled hot coffee on myself, jumped onto a piece of
broken glass, jumped back off of it and landed with my other foot on another
piece of broken glass, stumbled back, fell over hitting my head and pulled a
pile of books down on me! My life is a Jerry Lewis movie!
Or there was the time I was in the act of coitus, when her ex-boyfriend
broke into the room....I jumped up and fell ***** backwards off the bed,
crashing into a book case, causing a porcelain unicorn on the top to fall
horn first into my groin and smacking my head on the bed frame as I sat up
in reaction!
