OT: Need advice for Newsreader for PC |
Hi everyone,
I have a friend who is getting a new old PC pretty soon (unsure what it
is or what OS it has on it), and she wants to be able to get on Usenet,
read the newsgroups, download music and all that. Can anyone recommend
a good Windows-based newsreader for someone who's totally computer
illiterate and needs something simple at first, but which will get the
job done. Since she's tight for money a free newsreader would be
preferable, but I'd be willing to buy Agent for her if anybody
recommends it over a free program. Also, what web browser and e-mail
programs would you recommend? I heard Firefox is supposed to be good,
and it is pretty nice on the Mac.
Thanks,
--Sean C

Gravity is a full commercial newsreader that was turned over to the
freebie sector.
That or FreeAgent.
Please make sure she forges her headers.

I use Pan, which has a Windows version, I believe. If she's tight for
money she may want to go ahead and just install Linux as the only OS: it
costs no $$$, but you do have to invest a little more personal attention.
WRT browsers & email, go with Firefox and Thunderbird, no question.

Well, there are plenty of options, Outlook Express can read news and e-mail,
I use X-news... http://xnews.newsguy.com it's free, can download multi part
binaries, handles YENC on the fly...

I'd suggest Linux.
Old usually means Window 95, 98, or 2000. For a newbie,
battling viruses, worms, and all the other problems plaguing
Windows is a problem. She will soon be unhappy.
Start with Mandriva or Suse, use KDE, start with Knode.
If that is too much for an old computer, run one of the
lightweight windows managers.
I use Knode for newsreading, Mozilla for mail, Opera
for a browser. Firefox and others work well too. Battling
Windows nasties is just almost a full time job for a
newbie, and one slip up and you are in for learning a
lot about repairing a broken Windows system.
http://www.linuxcd.org/?ref=distrowatch
Start here.
Maybe try Mandriva, it has an active newsgroup,
get a Knoppix live CD, try Kubuntu maybe. Part of the
attractivness of Linux is the fact that she can also get
a lot of free software, Open Office, K3b, and so on.

Speaking of Open Office, I realized just the other day they have it for Windows,
too. Maybe that's common knowledge, but prior to researching the issue a bit, I
thought they only made it for Linux. I have one Linux and one Windows computer,
each for different reasons & programs. Now I can work on my files on either
one. I was about to contemplate shelling out $90 or so for MS Office but then
realized I didn't have to. I've not used it _too_ dreadfully exstensively, but
even the spreadsheet program works quite well, and the power point style
presentation program... Open Office is the way to go, be you on Linux _or_ on
Windows. :-)

I agree. Open Office has features MS Office lacks. It can save files as
PDFs, and it's equation editor is superior.

Thunderbird (Not Firefox!) works for email and newsgroups (same
interface, only the setup procedure for the server is different), so she
would need to learn only how to handle one program.
It's free, so no issue with money.
She can claim she "is giving it to Micro$oft" (note $ sign!!!), a
favorite past time for many people.
AFAIK it is available for all mayor OS.
It is easy to use, but you have to take my word for it, and I'm not
qualified to compare it with many other programs.
Killfile is limited to searching the sender and subject, but for a
beginner this may not matter anyway.

firefox for browsing, thunderbird for email/news. There may be a

If you're willing to buy Agent, see if she's the type who would read
and learn from a good manual.....if so, order Agent in the
shrink-wrap. It comes with a very good book that can address needs of
a casual user as well as professionals. At least mine did when I
ordered it years ago.
If she is only aiming to be a casual user I suppose the free ones
suggested by the others are good.

Thanks everyone for the advice. She's going to go with Firefox,
Thunderbird and Agent for now, and then make the switch to Linux when
she gets a little more familiar with the computer.
