In December 2001, Argentina was a country staring up from the bottom of
the abyss. The banks had shut their doors to customers clamouring to
get money out of their accounts, the economy was in free fall and the
country went through four presidents in a month.
Few would have imagined then that little more than three years later,
Argentina would be able to offer its creditors a measly 30 cents in
every dollar - at most - of the $102.6bn (=A353.3bn) owed by Latin
America's second biggest economy. The biggest debt default in history
was rightly described by the country's president Nestor Kirchner as the
"greatest deal ever" for a debtor nation. He was guilty of
understatement when he said creditors had taken a "haircut". This was
more of a scalping.
