So how will the internet affect the election? The short answer is: more
than you'd think, but not in the ways the political parties expect.
The long answer takes us back to Howard Dean's ill-fated bid to become
the Democratic candidate in the US presidential election. Early on in
his campaign, Dean enlisted Joe Trippi, a Silicon Valley veteran, as
his internet guru. Within a few weeks, Trippi and his team had set up
an innovative, web-savvy online operation that raised astonishing
amounts of money, garnered widespread activist support and gave their
candidate a head start in the primary races.
