Obama in NYC: Changing the Past?

Appearing at a rally attended by thousands in Washington Square Park
in New York last night, Barack Obama made sure to remind the crowd
that he knew his way around downtown, from his three years in the city
in the early 1980s. "It is good to be back in New York," he said,
adding that he "used to hang out in Washington Square Park" and knew
"a little something about Greenwich Village." He joked: "I was going
to say I know some of the bars around here, but I think my
communications director was trying to cut that off."
The "Obama Republican"

Barack Obama came to NYC yesterday and had a large rally in front of
the Washington Square Arch. I wasn't there but heard he was quite
good.
Later in the evening the Gotham Gal and I attended a small gathering
of supporters and potential supporters (with us in the latter camp).
It's the kind of event I've been looking to attend for the past nine
months. I want to look the person in the eye before supporting them
and asking others to do the same.

It's hard to hate Barack Obama. When friends tell me he inspires them,
I can't disagree. When he speaks, he has a way of lifting his long
hands in front of his shoulders and slowly rocking them back and
forth, as if he is literally measuring the breadth of an issue - or
perhaps honing his messianic imitation. I remember watching him answer
some absurdly vague question about education policy, and up went the
hands, spread shoulder-length in front of him as his eyes relaxed, as
though to say: "I know this is a complicated issue that has eluded
voters and politicians for a long time, but I'm beginning to see it.
It's here, in clear focus in front of me. And now, I'd like to talk to
you about what I'm seeing." (Full disclosure about me.)
That's Obama's strength: a confidence so calm that when he speaks in
front of thousands of supporters, or even millions of viewers, he
looks like he could be speaking to a neighbor while he pushes his
daughter on a swing. From a friend, such effortless sincerity might be
merely charming. But from politicians, who often seem no more than
fleshy robots programmed with automated answers, it is downright
inspiring.

Barack Obama drew a crowd officially estimated at 24,000 last night on
Hillary Clinton's home turf in Manhattan. In this week's dead-tree
TIME, I look at what he is--and isn't--doing to close the gap with a
frontrunner who is looking increasingly inevitable.
An Obama-Eye View of New York

I took this photo earlier tonight at the big Barack Obama rally in NY.
His staff had a scissors lift (a.k.a. a cherry-picker) and was taking
photographers - and, by the end of the evening, print reporters as
well - up in it to get crowd shots. Obama communications director
Robert Gibbs said 22,758 people registered online to attend the rally
in Manhattan's Washington Square Park, right across the street from
New York University, though it's impossible to know how many of them
showed up. It was a very big rally, that's for sure.
Obama took the stage to the strains of Kanye West's "Touch the Sky" (a
number of us political press dorks were uncertain of this, but - love
the New York press corps - I confirmed it with a nearby reporter from
Vibe Vixen) and left to the beat of Yellowcard's "Believe," which I
didn't notice until Googling later is a 9-11 tribute song.

Barack Obama rally in NYC!
http://bram.livejournal.com/800189.html
I was about 50 feet away from Barack Obama as he gave his speech in
Washington Square Park in NYC today!
I had walked across town from a previous engagement, met my awesome
friend Steve who printed out for me my internet pass to get a prime
position for the rally--(unfortunately Steve had to go back to work)--
And then there were the interminable intros to the speech--having gone
to political rallies before I expected this, but the rally was right
next to NYU, and filled with young people having their first
experience with politics. They didn't expect this--they wanted Obama
right away!

On September 18, Senator Barack Obama spoke to a cheering crowd at the
site of Washington's old Convention Center (now demolished) on 11th

"redesign how we think about our foreign policy." He proposed talking
to our adversaries without conditions, and bringing in other nations
in order to find a resolution of the Iraq conflict.
The rally attracted a wide variety of spectators: men and women of all

Did you watch the Democratic debate last night? I think it was the

said. He thought that the night was kind of about Edwards getting up
in Hillary's face with Obama being cool and detached. I think in the
long run, though, that still may serve Obama well. (I offer my usual
caveat that my wife works for Hillary.)
Obama the Subtle

To give an example of the Subtle Obama Dynamic I talked about
yesterday, I wound up yesterday evening covering my first ever Obama
mega-rally in Washington Square Park. At some point during his
address, he starts talking about experience. First he notes that he
actually has a lot of experience of various sorts. So then he says
that people who say he doesn't have experience (but he never says who
these people are) must mean experience in Washington. But, he notes,
***** Cheney and Don Rumsfeld had great resum=E9s before taking jobs in
the Bush administration. "Experience," he says, "is no guarantee of
good judgment."
At this point I heard one television reporter remark to a confused
camera operator "that's a dig at Hillary." He then moves on to
recounting the dispute with Hillary about talking with foreign
dictators.

Obama is and, to date, always has been a small timer. Although he's
aiming for the highest office in the land, which is pretty much the
highest office in the world, his practical experience is minimal, and
it keeps on showing. His latest move, to support the DREAM act which
will encourage in-state tuition fees for illegal immigrants is getting
shrieks of outrage - from his own base. Thus, Jill Chapin, a self-
described Obama supporter, has this to say:
This bill resonates with your base in a way that will ensure your
losing the nomination. It smacks of unfairness, of people at the end
of the line getting to move up to the front. It appeases the non-
citizens while enraging registered voters. It makes us question your
priorities. In a perfect world, all children would have access to a
first-class education. But the United States simply cannot educate the
world.

I live in a neighborhood of New York City called Greenwich Village, or
often just The Village. We don't seem to get visited by Presidential
candidates very much. Maybe some of them take us for granted; maybe
others don't even bother. The neighborhood does tend to be a
little . . . but let's leave politics out of it. Politics can be
divisive, and the last thing we need is another 8 years of Rovian
divisiveness.

Democratic Debate in New Hampshire
Given the unfair advantage of several more questions then the other
candidates, and almost complete conversations with Tim Russert,
Hillary did quite well during MSNBC Debate Wednesday night in New
Hampshire. At least she didn't hurt herself any.
The trick question about torture and if she thought it was right to
use it in certain cases, was in my view, a planted question. Bill
Clinton's comments about torture were well discussed in the media. She
had to have known what Bill said in the past about the issue.

Two striking differences.
Magical Michelle Obama Hijacks the Straight-Talk Express
http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2007/09/michelle_obama_hijacks_the_str.html
The Obama campaign went into mild damage-control mode this week
because Barack's wife, Michelle Obama, said her husband must win Iowa
- if not, then the campaign is "just a dream." Obama's people say she
was ginning up the ground troops (the remark was made in Iowa). But
guess what: She's right. Obama needs to be a massive hit in Iowa.
Aided by the Republicans who use her as a fundraising scarecrow,
Hillary Clinton has been incredibly successful acting like she's
already been nominated - her lead is continuing to widen. If she aces
Iowa, the self-fulfilling prophesy of her candidacy will just domino
from there. (This is how we ended up with Kerry in 2004.) There's no
shame in framing Iowa as a do-or-die state for Obama - in fact, saying
it out loud right now could be a shrewd move that will get more non-
Iowans to come down and work the state. More importantly, though, the
incident highlights why Michelle Obama is our single favorite thing
about this entire campaign season.

Obama

This is not an endorsement for Barack Obama, the United States Senator
from Illinois and Democratic candidate for President of the United
States in 2008. I am not particularly political nor that informed
regarding the various candidates. But this was a huge event for
Washington Square Park and the first time I recall a presidential
candidate having a rally here. Obama's campaign aides said that 24,000
people attended the event. Initially, crowds were confined to the
outer perimeters of the park. At one point, however, frustrated
attendees just broke through with security giving up. The crowd
funneled through the openings, metal detectors and into the central
plaza, where the speaking platform and press areas had been set up. I
was able to get a line of sight to Obama and listened to his 41-minute
address. The audience was quite mixed with many NYU students - at 46
years old, he definitely appeals to a younger demographic. He came
onto the stage to a song by rapper Kanye West and mentioned hanging
out in Washington Square Park when he was younger (he has also
admitted to the use of alcohol, marijuana and cocaine as a teenager).
Many attended because it was just something to do. Most seemed to find
Obama quite charismatic. His background is very interesting. Born in
Hawaii in 1963 - his father is from Kenya with a PhD from Harvard and
his mother from Kansas. Obama himself has a BA from Columbia, a
Harvard Law degree and a number of other impressive academic and
political achievements. Campaign promises were made to a cheering
crowd, such as universal health care by the end of his term and ending
the war in Iraq. Obama characterized and championed himself as a
Washington outsider - not the first time we have heard this claim ...

An interview with Barack Obama about his presidential platform on
energy and the environment
By Amanda Griscom Little
30 Jul 2007
In his two and a half years in the U.S. Senate, Barack Obama has been
active -- even hyperactive -- on matters of energy and the
environment. The Democrat from Illinois has introduced or cosponsored
nearly 100 eco-related bills on issues ranging from lead poisoning and
mercury emissions to auto fuel economy and biofuels promotion. Along
the way, he's racked up a notable 96 percent rating from the League of
Conservation Voters.
But it hasn't been all hugs and kisses between Obama and enviros. Some
green activists wrinkle their noses at the senator's overarching
emphasis on bipartisan consensus, insisting that real environmental
change won't happen without tough partisan battles against entrenched
interests. Enviros have also knocked Obama for his support of corn-
derived ethanol and liquid coal, both of which would benefit
industries in his home state of Illinois but do little if anything to
reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.

I've written about this before and been tolds it's too early to get
into a discussion about deciding between the two frontrunners Obama
and Hillary. Well now I think it can be debated that it is not too
early anymore. John Edwards choice to mortgage his ability to compete
in the long general election campaign for money to compete agianst
Obama and Hillary to me renders him a lower tier candidate who I can't
support. Edwards would have been better off self-funding like Kerry
than taking this step which as Joe Trippi stated in 2003 cripples the
nominee for months. They can spin all they want now but 527's are not
the same as campaign dollars and for whatever reason Edwards despite
huge netroots support simply can not compete with Obama and Hillary.
This is not a bash Hillary diary in fact I would probabaly support her
over Edwards at this point but we don't have to settle for Hillary.
Obama is not done despite what the media says, he's drawing huge
crowds, raising huge amounts of money and in a 3 way tie in Iowa. With
our support he can defeat Hillary and lead us to a landslide victory
WITH coattails on our downballot ticket. Dodd may be better on some
things but lets not make the perfect the enemy of the good.

Today in an address at the Howard University 2007 Convocation
Ceremony, Barack Obama outlined his plan to address the disparities
that continue to persist within America's legal system.

"To all of the honored and distinguished guests faculty staff and

an honor to receive this degree from Howard.
Now there are few other universities that have played so central a
role in breaking down yesterday's barriers, and inching this country
closer to the ideals we see inscribed on the monuments throughout the

Now, I no it's not proper to discuss sex, religion or politics in

Now let's go!!!
Yesterday evening I made a half-hearted, if not lame, attempt to
attend a Barack Obama rally held here in New York City at the
legendary Washington Square Park. I was aware of this rally only
because I had received at least 20 emails/text messages throughout the
day announcing this monumental event and how it was incumbent upon all
of "us" to support Barack Obama. There was something extremely
presumptuous in several of the emails and/or text messages in the
assumption that all of "us" were Obama supporters.
Obama hopes for strong youth vote

HANOVER, N.H. -- In a speech to students at Dartmouth University
Wednesday, Obama's New Hampshire's State Director told students that a
win in the Granite State could be decided by the youth vote. "If we
can get two to three thousand extra votes from you guys that could be
four to five, six, seven percent of the vote," Matt Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez pushed students to register and vote in New Hampshire and to
encourage their friends and dorm mates to do the same. His speech
reflected a campaign strategy to increase turnout among young voters
in New Hampshire. Obama's campaign has five dedicated college
organizers to get out the vote on campuses across the state. Their
efforts appear to be paying off at least at Dartmouth, where Obama
signs and t-shirts are ubiquitous across the picturesque New England
campus.
A Few Words About Barack Obama
http://bitterisataste.blogspot.com/2007/09/few-words-about-barack-obama.html
Friday, September 28, 2007
this entry brought to you by the white stripes, "you don't know what
love is (you just do as you're told)"
Right now, I'm not really a Barack Obama guy. If he gets nominated for
the Democratic Party, I'll of course vote for him during the general
election-- I'd vote for any Democrat, really, no matter who gets
nominated. I think Obama's a good man, and part of me wonders if he's
exactly what the country needs. But I do think he's a little too
moderate for my tastes, and I also am worried about his youth and
inexperience.
But I don't want to go on and on about his apparent slights as a
presidential candidate. What I want to talk about are the certain
black contituents that feel Barack Obama isn't "black enough" and
won't support him because of it. Jesse Jackson himself even criticized
Obama for "acting like a white man".
happy birthday to me... i'm finally legal. yay.
http://mabonny.blogspot.com/2007/09/obama-rally-in-nyc.html
OK.
My last class ended at 4:10PM, and the gates for the rally opened at
5PM. I found my friend, and we both headed off to Washington Square.
Since I got a pair of 'VIP' tickets, we got to go in through the first
entrance thinking, "wow...we don't have to wait as long as people
without tickets." Boy, were we wrong! We kept walking and walking...
and then... BAMM! There was a HUGEEE crowd of people waiting their
turn to get past the metal detector/security checks. There were so
many people, everyone looked like little ants. It seemed like we were
standing in the same spot for around 2 hours. It was a long wait.
Everytime the crowd moved, everyone pushed and shoved their way up. It
was a battle, but its ok. I'm a fighter. HA. My friend, Simon, on the
other hand... well, he wasn't much of a fighter, so I ended up farther
up than him. Yupp. they didnt allow umbrellas in to the rally, so alot
of people had to leave their umbrellas behind...including me. Now I
have no umbrella.
OBAMA AND "BLACKNESS"

I find the criticisms of Barak Obama for being "too white" that come
from some "black" so-called "leaders" and commentators, unbelievably
insulting and disappointing.

The latest debate highlighted her struggle to benefit from popular

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's rivals for the Democratic
presidential nomination often deliver oblique criticisms of her role
in the turbulent administration of her husband, labeling her a
Washington insider and calling on voters to "turn the page" on an era
of political polarization.
But as Wednesday night's New Hampshire primary debate showed,
Clinton's rivals are moving closer to translating that innuendo into
full-bore attacks on some of the more unpleasant memories of the
Clinton years, with its failed healthcare plan, impeachment and
frequent showdowns with the GOP.
Obamarama
http://www.ultrabrown.com/posts/obamarama
Presidential candidate Barack Obama stepped out of a black SUV outside
Washington Square Park last night and begin glad-handing his way
through the crowd. Smiling dazedly without locking eyes, he seemed
more reserved than Bill Clinton, who I'm told sprouts tentacles of
personal interest. But he was late for his rally and reportedly
battling the flu.
Rally organizers were turning away people without tickets. The park
was dripping with thousands of Obama supporters and curious passers-
by. I fell in step with a curly-haired desi guy who flashed a
reservation printout and got both of us waved through. Score one for
helpin' a brotha.
Its hard to be Barack Obama: The enigma of the Black President

of.html
As far as Obama is concerned, what people have to understand is this
is the first Blackman that really has the opportunity to be President.
Chisholm, Jackson and Sharpton never stood a chance. Obama really has
a chance to be president. He has the support of some big timers, white
and Black even Latino. You ask why is he taking big checks from these
(white) corporations? He needs their vote , thats why ! He is running
for president of the United States of America which is over 80% white.
As long as we understand that even if every Black person in the
country voted for Barack , he still wouldn't be president. You show me
a Black presidential candidate with a Black nationalist ideology and
I'll show you a very, very white president.

There has been some talk that he is falling off his game, but anyone
who was in Washington Square park tonight knows thats not true. The
whole rally was amazing, and can best be described as a political rock
concert. There was some trouble getting in at the beginning, because
of security, causing people to stand outside of the square for 2
hours, waiting to get in. Although when it got to a few minutes before
obama came up, they just lifted everything and let everyone in. (this
may have something to do with the fact the crowd was chanting "we want
in" lol)
Obama: Spirit of '68?
http://www.walrusmagazine.com/blogs/2007/09/28/obama-spirit-of-68/
It's not easy filling Manhattan's Washington Square Park, but tonight
Barack Obama came pretty close. "Obama rally draws thousands" is the
Newsday headline. The Times' headline is even better: "Obama Rallies
Huge Crowd in New York." Tonight's storyline - drawing a big crowd in
the backyard of your main opponent - is certainly better than the
storyline of quiet desperation from earlier today.
Big, high-energy rallies are great. Howard Dean did big high-energy
rallies. The last time I listened to a presidential campaign rally was
February 2004, in Lacrosse, Wisconsin. I was working on Dean's
campaign, and even though he was reeling from a third-place finish in
Iowa a few weeks earlier, we filled - okay, nearly filled - a big room
with genuinely excited supporters. The next time I saw him was on TV,
a few days later; he was back in Vermont announcing it was over.

Obama in NYC
http://hippotea.blogspot.com/2007/09/obama-in-nyc.html
The American political process has mainly been a disappointment during
my lifetime. Even with Bill being a brighter spot through my later
middle school/early high school years, I've reached 25 with a certain
disillusionment with American democracy. A law school professor said a
few days ago that his generation grew up with the Warren Court handing
down decisions like Brown, and that it was a time of institutional
change and empowerment, and the Constitution was a document for the
people.
It's been a while since the Constitution has enjoyed the practical
voice of real people. I've grown up with the counter-affirmative-
action cases, standing doctrine, federalism, and legalized torture. In
my lifetime the Constitution has become a charade, a document that
does not embody principles, just sentences and apparently an archaic
love for 18th century gentry thinking.

Is Barack Obama following John Kerry's instruction manual, as
explained by Democratic strategist Bob Shrum, for how to win the
Democratic nomination for president? The American Prospect's Ezra
Klein thinks Obama is waiting for Hillary Clinton and John Edwards to
engage in a death-match/suicide pact of down-to-the-wire mudslinging.
He writes on his personal blog:
[In 2003], the Kerry [campaign] basically held its fire all through
the fall, letting Gephardt and [Dean] maul each other in Iowa.
Supporters and strategists attacked them for their apparent lethargy
even in the face of a seeming electoral deficit. But Shrum's thinking
was that they were everyone's second choice, would lose that
distinction if they went strongly negative, and so the only way they
could win was to bide their time and let the [others] destroy each
other. When asked, internally, what would happen if Gephardt and Dean
didn't cooperate Shrum's reported answer was that the Kerry campaign
would lose. That seems to be the thinking of the Obama campaign, too.
Obama's Fallacy, Part 2
http://cabaretic.blogspot.com/2007/09/obamas-fallacy-part-2.html
In a previous post, I argued that Barack Obama lacks the killer
instinct needed to be a success in the dog-eat-dog world of politics.
This post is a variation upon the same theme.
Obama has thus far advanced the politics of hope and good
sportsmanship, rather than fear and dirty tricks, and for that I do
applaud him. It takes courage to dare to be idealistic and optimistic
in these cynical days. However, I don't think good intentions alone
are sufficient to win elections. Nor do I believe in romanticized
notions of clean campaigning.

Mount Prospect, Ill.: How do you reconcile the apparent wide gap

puts Obama at the top tier, above Clinton? Is it possible that despite
those polls, this grassroot movement for Obama is something the media
is missing that will show its strength at the voting/caucus settings,
and that is why Obama continues to avoid any strident criticisms of
Clinton?

Experts Praise Obama's Plan To Create Equal Opportunity and Justice
For All
http://thinkonthesethings.wordpress.com/2007/09/28/experts-praise-obamas-pl=
an-to-create-equal-opportunity-and-justice-for-all/
The Barack Obama campaign reports on several top civil rights experts
who praise the plan he laid out today to create equal opportunity and
justice for all:
"As a lawyer who has spent much of his career working in the criminal
justice system as a prosecutor and as a judge, it was inspiring to
hear Senator Obama's remarks at Howard. He understands and articulates
in a way that no other candidate has that to be effective in the fight
against crime we have to ask tough questions that challenge the
conventional wisdom and be ready to implement serious changes. The
fight against crime, as Senator Obama so eloquently noted, is not only
about putting people in jail- it's also about eradicating the
conditions that breed crime and making sure that the criminal justice
system is fair and is perceived as such. In that regard, through his
detailed, specific proposals, he has shown himself to be both tough
and smart- the essential qualities in an effective crime fighter. This
is among the reasons why I support him for President. He alone among
those running for President- including those who claim to be so
experienced- has the track record, the vision, the courage and the
sense of justice that is so sorely needed at this critical time. With
our violent crime rate rising for the first time in years it is time
for a new leader with new approaches to the crime problems that have
bedeviled us as a nation for too long. That person is Barack
Obama." [Eric Holder, Former Deputy Attorney General of the United
States, 1997-2001]
Bill Clinton Discusses Barack Obama's Experience
http://liberalvaluesblog.com/?p=3D2209
Bill Clinton questions whether Barack Obama is experienced enough to
run for president. Sure I'd like it better if Obama had a little more
experience, but Bill Clinton in hardly the person whose opinion I'd
ask about Obama. I believe he has a horse in this race.
In a perfect world all the candidates would also be perfect. Both
front runners would be highly experienced. Neither would have made
mistakes such as supporting going to war in Iraq, supporting the
Patriot Act, or supporting federal legislation to outlaw flag
desecration. Perhaps experience isn't the only criteria here,
especially when Hillary Clinton has been on the wrong side so many
times, starting with her original health care plan.

We just got this great statement in from our Senator!
STATEMENT ON THE PLANNED PARENTHOOD FACILITY IN AURORA
http://ppaurora.blogspot.com/2007/09/sen-barack-obamas-statement-on-our.html
WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Barack Obama (D-IL) today released the
following statement on Planned Parenthood's decision to open a new
facility in Aurora, Illinois:
"I fully support Planned Parenthood's desire to open a new facility in
Aurora. Planned Parenthood will provide a valuable and necessary
service to the Aurora community, which has seen an increase in the
uninsured population, as well as an increase in sexually transmitted
disease rates. The proposed center will serve the growing population
in a part of the state where access to a full range of reproductive
health care services is lacking. Every day the health center is not
open, more women go without critical services such as pap tests,
contraceptive care, cancer screening, and breast exams."

Obama: Jena case shows law's 'inequities'
By Mike Dorning | Washington Bureau
September 29, 2007
WASHINGTON - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama promised
Friday to right "glaring inequities" in the U.S. justice system that
he said were exposed by local officials' handling of a racially
charged fight among high school students in Jena, La.
"We know these inequities are there," Obama said in a speech at the
historically black Howard University in Washington. "We know they're
wrong. And yet they go largely unnoticed."

Still, before the day was over, the Democratic presidential hopeful
managed to squeeze in time to visit an influential national television
