OT: New Agent 4.0, anybody got filtering on newsgroups to work? |
I upgraded because I can killfile on things like rec.ponds in the
newsgroups line, but can't get this to work.

Fine. But I want to know how it is done in Agent. I am used to agent
and never got the hang of xnews.
None of these are as good as the ancient rn the I used on unix 15

There is a nice news reader SLRN that is sort of
RN on steroids. I long used TRN under DOS.
SLRN can be run under Windows in a DOS box but many
IPSs no longer allow direct access to their systems
as in old days with TRN. I use Linux and with
leafnode, I can download a newsgroup to my own
news spool and read it with SLRN, or even good ol'
TRN if I desire. TRN was RN's successor. The Pine
package has it, last I knew that was for Linux and DOS.
Another way is to set up a filtering proxy that can dump
unwanted posts before it hits Agent.
I have no idea what good free filtering proxies
may be out there for Windows. There are some good
ones but usually $$$$
Linux systems usually come with squid.

I think a lot of the subroutines in Xnews were copied from Agent. Ours is
in ARTICLE -> ADD TO SCORE FILE. It becomes self-explanitory.

I'm just happy that Agent finally has built-in image decoding. It's
inexcusable that the self-proclaimed "world's best newsreader" took
ten years to incorporate this very basic function that every other
newsreader has had since day one.

It should be selectable by newsgroup. The binary group I spend most
time in, is alt.binaries.pictures.railroad, and I only want a small
amount of the pictures there - mostly British steam before
preservation, 19th century steam anywhere and some first generation
diesels.
It is also a high volume newsgroup.
I finally worked out what my problem with filtering by newsgroup was -
it is messier to set up compared with doing it by author or subject,
and only does it when messages are retrieved.
It won't do it to messages already retrieved, which explains why they
didn't disappear when I closed the new filter box.
Surely they could have done it a more user friendly way.
I still want it to filter out responses to the loonies when I don't
want to kill the entire thread.

I'm still running the 30 day trial. Haven't decided yet if I'm going
to buy it or not.
I do spend a lot of time in alt.binaries.photos.original, a group
where photographers can post their work to be viewed and critiqued by
other photographers, so if I decide to keep Agent 4, it would relieve
me of any need to use OE.

Chris, I recommend that if you want the ability to do a decent job of
fiiltering your news, agent is not the one for you. I used it, & it did
not do the job for me, either in windows or in OS-2.

I know. When I first started on usenet 15-16 years ago, I used rn from

anybody could ever want, using simple commands to search header lines
and even t he entire message.

There are only two newsreaders I am aware of that allow filtering based on

I've got bigger problems with McAfee now.
All of a sudden my machine started telling me I was running a
counterfeir Windows system. I suspected McAfee because the icon had
moved to the furthest right in the tray, meaning it was started
earliest.
So I removed McAfee and am now running a trial version of ZoneAlarm.
So far it seems to be doing the job.
I no longer get the counterfeit Windows message.
I had previously tried PC-cillin but didn't like it so I had gone back
to McAfee.

earliest.
So I removed McAfee and am now running a trial version of ZoneAlarm.
So far it seems to be doing the job.
Try AVG from Grisoft for A/V, it picked up a w32 trojan loader on my
Dad's machine that Nortons waffled on, one part said it was clean,
another said it was infected. Solved with avg.
I no longer get the counterfeit Windows message.
I had previously tried PC-cillin but didn't like it so I had gone back
to McAfee.

Thanks, but I finally worked out what was happenning on Agent. It's not
very good but at least it works.
If you want something basically better & easier to work wioth, the offer
stands. It is also open to other regular members of the atheist news
group. Did I mention the server is freeware?

Chris, I recommend that if you want the ability to do a decent job of
fiiltering your news, agent is not the one for you. I used it, & it did
not do the job for me, either in windows or in OS-2.
I know. When I first started on usenet 15-16 years ago, I used rn from a
unix shell account. This was simple and did all the filtering anybody
could ever want, using simple commands to search header lines and even t
he entire message.
IIRC, rn is still around
Flavors, trn, slrn.
Now I use a news server that allows just what you need. I can provide the
url only in email, no need to give it to the trolls & invaders now is
there. I can even provide sample filter files that I use [regular perl
expressions] so you can see what you need to do.
There are only two newsreaders I am aware of that allow filtering based on
message contents, neither one having any other bragging rights over the
other newsreaders. It just might save you some aggravation to find out if
you can use that news server, your call.
There are news servers that do not filter, but they all use 127.0.0.1 & do
not depend on server side filtering.
I've got bigger problems with McAfee now.
All of a sudden my machine started telling me I was running a
counterfeit Windows system. I suspected McAfee because the icon had
moved to the furthest right in the tray, meaning it was started
earliest.
So I removed McAfee and am now running a trial version of ZoneAlarm.
So far it seems to be doing the job.
Windows stopped whining about counterfeit version as soon as I removed
McAfee.
No problems with Zonealarm so far.

That's the next one to try.
At least they all do free evaluation these days.
We use AVG at work. It seems pretty good.

I'll upgrade and try it, but I'll do a total backup and copy it to the
other 'puter, first so I have a recourse. I marked this for keep to
reminde me. I'm drunk now. I'll try back Monday.

I did get it to work, but it's a poor way of doing it. You have to
manually type "newsgroups: " instead of clicking, followed by a
cut'n'paste of the newsgroup name. Which is inconvenient for an old
phart like me with bad eyesight who can't type.
I normally let it bring up the sender or subject and remove bits to
make it a bit more generic because I get less errors that way
Even if you check the "apply filters immediately" box it doesn't
delete anything.
This is because it does it when it is retrieving the message and won't
look at ones already retrieved.
