Object: OT: New planetoid found in our solar system
Distant object found orbiting Sun
By Dr David Whitehouse
Science editor, BBC News website
Astronomers have found a large object in the Solar System's outer
reaches. It is being hailed as "a great discovery".
Details of the object are still sketchy. It never comes closer to the
Sun than Neptune and spends most of its time much further out than
Pluto.
It is one of the largest objects ever found in the outer Solar System
and is almost certainly made of ice and rock.
It is at least 1,500km (930 miles) across and may be larger than Pluto,
which is 2,274km (1,400 miles) across.
The uncertainty in estimates of its size is due to errors in its
reflectivity.
It might be a large, dim object, or a smaller, brighter object. Whatever
it is, astronomers consider it a major discovery.

The really pathetic thing is that Duke has no joy in his life.

On the contrary. Responses to his posts--especially
negative ones--make his day. If he wasn't important
would people be responding to him?

It is always a challenge to decide whether or not to respond to someone
like Duke. Having spent time over at talk.origins, I agree with the
consensus there: forget about the troll, but respond for the benefit of
any lurkers who really want to know what people think, or are honestly
looking for answers.
I think vitriolic responses, while cathartic, are ultimately
counterproductive, because those really do make Duke happy. And that's
really sad.

Don't you think there's another chunk of ice floating around out there,
and that it's only a matter of time before it's discovered? Ho hum.
Prayer Of A Worker:
Lord, Jesus Christ, I offer you today all my work, my hopes, my sorrows
and joy. Grant me the grace to remain close to you today, to work with
you and to do all that I do for your honor and glory. Help me to love
you with all my strength.
Help me, Lord, to give a full day's work for a full day's pay. Help me
to respect the property of others, to be honest in dealing with those
involved in this task, and to put forth effort with personal interest.
Give me the spirit of charity that I may contribute to the happiness of
all those with whom I work and when the job is done, grant us all a
peaceful rest.
St. Joseph, patron of workers, pray for me. Amen.

There are about 100 known Kuiper Belt objects, out of an estimated 10,000
objects with a diameter of 100km or more. That this particular planetoid is
big enough to be seen from such a vast difference is noteworthy.

Yes. There is much about the galaxy (and the universe) that we do not
know about. Of course, there are people who claim they know, but
they're acting under their own self-comforting delusions.

In a message sent 'round the world,
poured fuel on
the fire with the following:
....

Ho hum.

Prayer Of A Worker:

Ho hum.
The ship was sinking rapidly, and the Captain realized he had to act
quickly. He ordered everyone to put on a life jacket. Pausing for a
moment, he then said "Is anyone here willing to say a prayer?"
One man stepped forward and said "Yes Captain, I would be happy to say a
prayer."
Good! said the captain. "You pray while the rest of us put on our
lifejackets - we're one short."

Regards,
Josef

single petitioner, admittedly unworthy.

Isn't this the second one? I'm getting confused, do we have 9, 10, or 11
planets? Or, well, 8 maybe as Pluto's planet status seems disputed...

Last I heard, the international consensus was that Pluto (and its moon Charon)
had been demoted to trans-Neptunian or Kuiper Belt object. Its estimated
diameter of 2,320 km makes it only two-thirds the size of Earth's moon. In
fact, Pluto is smaller than six other moons in our solar system: Io, Europa,
Ganymede, Callisto, Titan and Triton. In addition, there are some 100 known
Kuiper Belt objects; other than size, Pluto and Chiron are indistinguishable
from these KBOs or known comets.

How about Hel after the Norse goddess of the dead, since life is rather
improbable out there. It goes along with Pluto, the Roman name for
Hades, the god of the dead. Proserpina, Pluto's consort, would be
another good choice if one wants to stick with Greco-Roman mythology.

I rather like the theme of naming major trans-Neptunian objects for creatures
of the underworld, although I an understand drawing on Inuit and other Arctic
cultures as well.
