Oh, come on!
What paragraph are you reading that in?
Bush isn't claiming space, he's telling China that we're ignoring
THEIR claims to space!
Yes, the Chinese claim that they own everything from the
ground upward, all the way out into space.
You've got it completely backwards!

Apologies in advance for the spelling. I'm reading a .pdf document, and
typing them by hand.
An almost open declaration to use space as a battlefield (from Section
1):
"In this new century, those who effectively utilize space will enjoy
added prosperity and security and will hold a substantial advantage
over those who do not. Freedom in space is as important to the United
States as air power and sea power."
A threat to other nations' capabilities for spaceflight (from Section
2):
"The United States will preserve its rights, capabilities, and freedom
of action in space...(skipping portions I consider fair)..*and deny, if
necessary, adversaries the use of space capabilities hostile to US
National Interests*" (emphasis mine)
Once again, the same ol' "..we can do that, but don't *you* get any
ideas!" crap that has made the US so hated overseas in the first place.
An implied desire to place military abilities in space (from Section
3):
"Strengthen the nation's space leadership and insure that space
capabilities are available in time to *further US national security*,
homeland security, and foreign policy objectives;" (emphasis mine)
"Further" national security? Why not "insure"? IMO, because everyone
knows missiles from orbit only have half the flight time of land-based
systems. Yeah, that'll make `em behave..
"Enable a robust science and technology base supporting national
security, homeland security, *and civil space activities;*" (emphasis
mine)
Why list civil activities separately? Why make it last on the list?
I'll concede that there *is* a lot of language about co-operation in
the document. But hey, hasn't Bush & Co. lied to us before?

This isn't an issue. "Freedom in space."

A threat to other nations' capabilities for spaceflight (from Section
2):

"The United States will preserve its rights, capabilities, and freedom
of action in space...(skipping portions I consider fair)..*and deny, if

It's really only saying that, just because they put it in space, we
won't treat it any differently.
Look. Things happen for a reason. This is getting flashed around
now NOT because Bush claims space for himself or the United
States, but because China has recently made such a claim.
"Claim"? They went further.
China claims they own space, or at least the space they say is
above all the land & sea that they claim. And they also say that
they have every intention of ENFORCING their claim. Towards this
end, they were firing lasers at U.S. satellites -- seen more as a
threatening gesture than a genuine attempt to affect the performance
of the satellites.
That's what's going on.
FAR from claiming that the U.S. owns space, this is saying:
#1. Space belongs to everyone.
#2. We see space as vital to our national interests.
#3. Attacks on our satellites are viewed the same as attacks
on our ships & planes.
#4. In times of war, putting it in space doesn't put it off limits.

An implied desire to place military abilities in space (from Section
3):

"Strengthen the nation's space leadership and insure that
space capabilities are available in time to *further US
national security*, homeland security, and foreign policy
objectives;" (emphasis mine)

Um, actually, we already have placed military payloads in
space. Everything from spy satellites, communications &
GPS. This has been true for about five decades.

"Further" national security? Why not "insure"? IMO, because
everyone knows missiles from orbit only have half the flight
time of land-based systems. Yeah, that'll make `em behave..

It says nothing about missiles. GPS systems were invented
for the military, and there's communication satellites and
spy satellites.

There are no coincidence. China spawned this document.
CHINA is making the claim you atribute to Bush. That's why
they released this.
This is a response to CHINA.

At the point of a gun?

A threat to other nations' capabilities for spaceflight (from Section

It's really only saying that, just because they put it in space, we
won't treat it any differently.

/sarcasm
And treating it as we have on the Earth's surface has worked out *so*
well for us, hasn't it?

Look. Things happen for a reason. This is getting flashed around
now NOT because Bush claims space for himself or the United
States, but because China has recently made such a claim.

"Claim"? They went further.

China claims they own space, or at least the space they say is

end, they were firing lasers at U.S. satellites -- seen more as a
threatening gesture than a genuine attempt to affect the performance
of the satellites.

That's what's going on.

So then, two wrongs make a right? The fact that there are now two
nations wishing to militarize space should point to the source of the
problem. We're taking our earthly squabbles into a place that should be
free from them. It's difficult and dangerous enough simply getting to
space in the first place.

FAR from claiming that the U.S. owns space, this is saying:

#1. Space belongs to everyone.
#2. We see space as vital to our national interests.
#3. Attacks on our satellites are viewed the same as attacks

Um, actually, we already have placed military payloads in

Military payloads, yes. Weapons, no. Do you really want to see weapons
in space?

"Further" national security? Why not "insure"? IMO, because
everyone knows missiles from orbit only have half the flight
time of land-based systems. Yeah, that'll make `em behave..

It says nothing about missiles.

And "regime change" said nothing about military invasion.

GPS systems were invented
for the military, and there's communication satellites and
spy satellites.

I'll concede that there *is* a lot of language about co-operation
in the document. But hey, hasn't Bush & Co. lied to us before?

CHINA is making the claim you atribute to Bush. That's why

This is a response to CHINA.

So let's have a military response, rather than negotiation. That's
worked out so well as our policy on earth, why not try it in space?
http://www.iraqbodycount.org/
The Chinese just want a little respect. Give it to them. They've put
humans in space on their own nickel. That's a very tough thing to do.
Invite them over to the ISS. Let's get together and go to the moon
(hell, might as well invite ESA, too). Why not try talking, before we
turn LEO into an armed camp? Where there's no air, no one can hear your
saber rattling.

human concern, and intellectual honesty to a degree that the religious mind

I had never thought of their function that way, but it would follow.

Up until around the end of the 19th century, birth and abortion were
strictly in the woman's domain. Then doctors realized all the money
they were losing and made medical attendance mandatory. Try (if you
were a woman) having a child these days with absolutely no medical
care or attention from conception to delivery.

Well...didn't they eventually find professional athletes using
steroids? Hey, it was important enough to put in the State of the Union

Never can tell what kind of world-wide cataclysm can be triggered by
an athlete using steroids. Much worse than killing half a million
innocent civilians for profit.

Only because they didn't get a cut.

Which is why midwives can no longer legally perform abortions.

I understand that's quite common in areas of the country-especially if
you have no medical insurance.

In areas in which it's common, a woman can bring a newborn into the
local records office (county clerk, etc.) and ask for a birth
certificate. Or the child can just use a baptismal certificate to
prove age and citizenship.
Try doing that in the big city. It's not illegal to request a birth
certificate based solely on testimony, but I don't think many
government officials are aware of that.

Imagine the people who believe such things and who are not ashamed
to ignore totally all the patient findings of thinking minds through all
the centuries since the Bible was written. And it is these ignorant
people, the most uneducated, the most unimaginative, the most unthinking
among us who would make themselves the guides and leaders of us all, who
would force their feeble and childish beliefs on us, who would invade
our schools and libraries and homes.

Many are unaware of a document called The Constitution, either.

Many, back in the day, would be shown a typed-up version of the
Declaration of Independence written in 20th century English and
declare it a "Commie" document.

Of course, _these_ days many of the doctors are women. Including, as it
happens, both my wife's regular gynecologist as well as her ObGyn.
(I might also mention that the doctor I've been seeing for some 20 years
also happens to be a woman.)
