Israeli 'sound' terrorism in Gaza

"Adults may know it's only a sound but small children feel threatened."
In an attempt to instigate fear and traumatise Palestinian
civilians in Gaza Strip, Israel adopts a new abusive tactic;
letting loose deafening "sound bombs" which cause widespread
fear, induce miscarriages and traumatize children, the latest of
human rights violations perpetrated by the Israeli Occupation
Forces (IOF).
Withdrawing from Gaza Strip didn't end Israel's control over the
territory, on the contrary- An editorial posted on The Guardian
says it opened the way for Israeli occupation army to use air
force jets to create dozens of sonic booms by breaking the sound
barrier at low altitude, causing widespread fear especially among
children, miscarriages, and heart problems, according to doctors.
Doctors' groups filed petition at the Israeli Supreme Court
demanding it to ban Israeli jets from breaking the sound barrier
over the Gaza Strip, as it amounts to illegal collective punishment.
Eyad El Sarraj, a psychologist and director of Gaza Community
Mental Health Programme, one of the groups filing the petition,
says "The stress is phenomenal. The Israelis do it after midnight
and then every one or two hours. You try to go to sleep and then
there's another one. When it happens night after night you become
exhausted. You get a heightened sense of alert, waiting
continuously for it to happen. People suffer hypertension,
fatigue, sleeplessness.
"For children, the loud noise means danger. Adults may know it's
only a sound but small children feel threatened. They are crying
and clinging to their parents. Afterwards they are dazed and
fearful, waiting for something to happen."
Few days ago, the Israeli forces flied military jest at high speed
and low altitude over Gaza, creating 28 sonic booms, which
Palestinians likened to a strong earthquake or huge bomb explosion.
"I have never heard such a loud explosion. I thought it was right
over the top of my building," said the owner, Tareq Dayyeh.
"Sometimes you hear the rockets the Israelis fire but this was
different. I felt like I was in the middle of a bomb. When I ran
out the door I thought I might find the rest of the street was gone."
A senior Israeli official, who demanded anonymity, said that the
tactic is aimed at breaking the civilians support for the Palestinian
armed resistance groups like Jihad, Fatah and Hamas. "We are trying
to send a message in a way that doesn't harm people. We want to
encourage the Palestinian public to do something about the terror
situation."
"What are the alternatives?"
But UN's Middle East envoy, Alvaro de Soto, wrote to the Israeli
high command this week, denouncing the inhuman tactic, saying it
can't be viewed as legitimate response to firing rockets into
Israeli towns.
"Sonic booms are an indiscriminate instrument, the use of which
punishes the population collectively. We ask therefore that their
use be stopped without delay," the letter said.
He added he was "deeply concerned at the impact on children,
particularly infants, of the use of sonic booms".
Khaled Abdul Shafi, the UN spokesman in Gaza said: "We at the
United Nations have already submitted a letter of protest to the
Israeli government urging them to stop... the sonic booming and
the air raids immediately, because we simply think that this is
a violation of basic human rights, especially rights of children
to live in peace and to be educated in peace."
Last week, one of the sonic booms was unintentionally heard inside
Israel, and the IOF was forced to apologise, reported Maariv
newspaper which described the sound "like a heavy bombardment".
"The noise that shook the Israeli skies was frightening. Thousands
of citizens leapt in panic from their beds, and many of them
placed worried calls to the police and the fire department. The
Tel Aviv and central district police switchboards crashed," the
paper added.
Palestinian patients who were hospitalized as a result of those
sonic booms suffer symptoms like anxiety attacks, bedwetting,
muscle spasms, temporary loss of hearing and breathing difficulties,
according to UN Palestinian refugee agency.
Also according to officials at Shifa hospital in Gaza, the sonic
booms caused numerous miscarriages.
Jumaa Saqqa, a surgeon and hospital spokesman stated that the
number of miscarriages among Palestinian women had increased by
40%.
"There were no other symptoms and the rise happened after the
sonic booms. We can see no other explanation. The number of
patients admitted to the cardiac care unit doubled. Some of them
proved to have suffered serious harm."
The Israeli military refused to comment. The army spokesman's
office said "Because the subject is before the Supreme Court, the
response will be given in that framework".
Israel's human rights violations are rampant in the occupied
territories, including intentionally killing civilians, including
children and women, house demolitions, land grabs, as well as
abusing detainees.
Numerous news reports and rights groups voiced concern over
Israel's use of torture and other abusive methods, including
violent shaking of detainees, restraining in very painful
conditions, sensory deprivation, and sounding of loud music for
long periods against political detainees, most of whom were never
charged with any crimes.
Scores of Palestinian prisoners died in Israeli jails as a result
of torture.
Also Israeli forces continue to arbitrarily detain hundreds of
Palestinians, put them under administrative detention, without
being charged or sentenced.
Israeli forces also carried out extra-judicial executions of
Palestinians. But soldiers responsible are very rarely punished.

I'm not aware of anyone advocating that folks fighting terrorism should
be nice to the terrorists, but as long as the injustice that fuels these
insurrections is continued, the insurrectionists will have a rich field
of volunteers. It is very smart to repair injustices so there the
insurrection is unable to argue that they are the only way to acheive
justice.

The PLO was formed in 1965, two years before the occupation of Gaza
and the West Bank. Hamas still has the goal of pushing all of the Jews
into the sea and has the support of Iran, at the very least. The
Palestinians have made the wrong choice every step along the way, at
some point they have to take some responsibility for their own
actions. They are the only refugees from 1948, out of the tens of
millions displaced persons at that time, who are still in refugee
camps. That is the fault of Egypt and Jordan and Syria and Lebanon and
the Palestinian leadership, not Israel.
