The Guardian
With a week to go before the election, the sounds of silence about the
main cause of economic instability are deafening. Perhaps that is
because for 17 years there has been one gatekeeper of US economic
policy: Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan - reinstated for a
fifth term partly because he's the most vocal cheerleader of Bush's
plans to cut taxes for the rich, mortgage the federal budget and
privatise social security.
