Gordon Brown has not retired. Over the past few weeks, a deep shadow
has hidden the chancellor as Tony Blair's energetic and impassioned
performances have dominated politics. But he hasn't gone away, or
stopped thinking about a different future. Nor has his political
ambition lessened. For those with ears to hear, that was the message of
this week's announcement on the public finances. And one day, not too
distantly, Labour is going to need Mr Brown.
