Just so nobody thinks I'm trying to sneak out of their kill files or
hide from their filter systems in any way, just thought I'd announce
this latest nym shift. I think the reason for the shift should be
obvious - a dollar bill is a buck, it's easier and shorter to type.
:-) C'est tout, merci.

Why are people afraid to express opinions under their real names?

Gee, why wouldn't I want to disclose my identity in a newsgroup
dedicated to true crime?

Don't rush me, I'm thinking...

Oh come on -- Even *I* haven't received any death threats.
And if *anybody* on this NG was gonna receive death threats.... ;-)

Well, I no longer think you're a feminist *****, but
I'm disappointed that you can't perceive the distinction
between "attacking a woman" and "attacking women".
If you really do think that any attack of any sort against
any woman is an "attack against women", then perhaps you

No, I don't have that big of an ego that I think a personal attack on
me is an attack on all women, although I think I would characterize
such an attitude as delusional rather than feminist or bitchy.
I simply mistook your statement of "I never attack women" to mean "I
never attack women" rather than "I never attack women as a group."
I've got it now. I'm inclined to believe you, although I understand
why you are frequently tarred by the same brush as those who do.

alt.atheism is full of interesting people and discussions, yet they

And it's not as if I'm trying to be anonymous. I never change my

I do express my real name, so this question doesn't apply to me. But
I can think of one reason:
Because if someone is enough of an ignorant, psychotic little ***** to
the point where they arrogantly presume they have any business
whatsoever telling you what name you should post under - on _Usenet_,
of all places - they might just be enough of an ignorant, psychotic
little ***** to hunt you down and kill you if you say something they
disapprove of.
Aside from which, I'm multiple. Do you _really_ want me signing every
post with ALL my real names? :-? It would be an ever-fluctuating
list and would confuse the hell out of people. I think just making
one that's "mostly appropriate for everyone behind these eyes" is
probably a _much_ better idea. ;-)

Yeah, it makes sense. Fortunately, and this is probably why it can be
talked about so freely and with good humor, my/our situation isn't
nearly as critical as most MPD individuals. We're sort of "all
present, all the time" - everyone stays "informed", so to speak. We
all combine together and give our input into what should or should be
said, etc... etc... etc... The net effect is the appearance of a
unified outward personality. Imagine a giant puppet with lots of
little people living inside controlling the strings. Sometimes one of
those little people will leave the puppet and/or another will emerge
onto the scene. A few of them are always there and always will be,
which helps with the appearance of consistency. As they operate the
puppet, they have to call out to each other constantly to let each
other know what they're doing so that the whole thing doesn't come
crashing down, but if they're good at it and can generally agree on
which direction to head, those watching the puppet from the outside
can be convinced that it's a single being. That's what it feels like.
Sometimes, there _are_ conflicts, where we can't act so unified and
communication breaks down so "we" don't all know what to do or we all
want to do different things, and so we do "crash". But that's not
often a problem. I also have the good fortune of being able to
generate new alters at will, something which comes in handy for
acting.
For the most part, while there are some alters that are pretty much
always kept "under wraps", so to speak, most of "us" get along well
with each other and are able to reach agreements quickly. It's a less
severe fragmentation than a lot of people go through - probably just
barely on the MPD side of the line. Most with MPD or other
dissociation aren't so lucky. Friction between individual fragments
is quite common, there's almost always a self-destructive one (or
more) in the bunch that isn't as easy to control as mine are and the
condition can range to anything from an inconvenient to completely
devastating for every facet of life.
Of course, as is sometimes evidenced by my posts, having more people
inside of you means there are more individuals who have something they
want to say on any given matter. I.e., "long-windedness". ;-) So
we'll shut up for now. ;-D

Thanks, Unc, I think I understand now. You guys/girls do an excellent
job, BTW. I can't tell one post from another, as far as to who may be
posting :) And thanks for explaining w/o taking offense. It must be hard
being all of you!

Anything else just wouldn't be you. ;-)

It must be interesting come birthday time-getting each person the
proper present... :)

Sorta'. What's even more "interesting" is when two alters fall in
love. I had two that wanted to get married one time, but they
scrapped the idea because they couldn't come up with a mutually
acceptable pre-nup. The main sticking point was who'd get to keep the
pets in the event of a break-up... Pity, too, as they made _such_ a
cute couple! :-(
Just kidding. ;-))) We've _had_ to keep a sense of humor about all
this craziness. It's the only way to feel like those who caused this
fragmentation aren't in some sense "defeating" us. We would post more
cracks about it (no pun intended), but have determined that would be
too insensitive to those for whom it's a much more profound problem.

Induced fragmentation. {mega shudder}
Agreed, if you lose your cents of humour then 'they' did win.

I can't speak for others, but I use a handle because it's fun! alt.atheism
is full of interesting people and discussions, yet they don't mind my role
playing. Some of the regulars even encourage it, IPU bless 'em.

And it's not as if I'm trying to be anonymous. I never change my handle,
and I rarely change my email address -- which is always a valid address,
BTW, not even spam-proofed. If you want to know about me, you can look up
tukla.net (which I own, duh) in whois, or, heck, I've been known to post
my name, address, and phone number in public forums like a.a. or Slashdot.

So, anyway, I'm just enjoying myself.

You may want to be a bit more circumspect, there are real loons out there.
I've been threatened a few times. Got "stalked" once. Not anything to do
with this ng and it was years ago now but, man, there are some real
crazies out there...
