Object: OT: Nym shift - Uncle Dollar Bill = Uncle Buck
Just so nobody thinks I'm trying to sneak out of their kill files or
hide from their filter systems in any way, just thought I'd announce
this latest nym shift. I think the reason for the shift should be
obvious - a dollar bill is a buck, it's easier and shorter to type.
:-) C'est tout, merci.

Gee, and hear I figured you'd change it to;
"Love Gift" to fit in with what the superstition industry worships.

Frankly, I think 'Buck' comes a bit closer to that than 'Love Gift'.

IMO, they're not only equivalent but the inheirant double entendre
you'd probably have great fun with.

D'OH! Didn't even think of "love gift" = "money", I was thinking you
meant something like donating a kidney or something. I should know
better than trying to have profound thoughts about anything religious.

Why is it called a dollar bill, I wonder. Most other paper currencies are
called notes - pound note, Euro note and so on.

JPG goes:

A banknote is a promissory note, and it's also a bill of exchange. In
other words it has a value which will be redeemed on presentation to
the issuer (PN), and it is also negotiable in that it may be used in
payment of other debts (BoE).
You could perhaps attempt a graduate thesis on the sociology of how
different nations regard their currency: Americans have bills
(emphasising the commercial value); Brits have notes (emphasising the
authority of the promise on every note); the French talk about a
"billet" -- ticket (which is also a promissory note), formerly letter,
as in 'billet doux' or love-letter; the Italians stay with 'biglietto
di banca' in the French sense; the Dutch also go for 'biljet'.
I've run out of languages.

LoL! :-) Actually, I think it was a famous conquerer. I'm sure
you've heard of him, but just in case I _need_ to spell it out,
"William the Conquerer". I've read a few "name dictionaries" in which
William is defined in something along those lines.

No. I started out by explaining that a banknote is a bill of exchange.
It's a debt owed to you by the government (or the central bank, to be
more correct). But you're allowed to sell that debt to someone else,
which is precisely what you're doing when you hand over a banknote in
payment for goods or services in normal commerce.
The debt part is why it's called a note; the trading part is why it's
also called a bill.
I'm not familiar with the history of French currency terms, but if
forced to at gunpoint, I'd guess that 'billet' translates as 'letter'
in this case, and is exactly the same as 'note'.
The first permanently circulating banknotes, according to Wikipedia,
were issued by the Bank of England in 1694. But it's clear that
private equivalents were in use long before that. It was only when
banks ran out of stocks of coins to redeem their notes (coins used to
be worth their face value, but later became promissory notes in metal
form) that banknotes acquired an intrinsic value. However what value
they have is entirely a matter of their use as bills of exchange. Not
to long ago, a banknote issued by one of the three Scottish banks
authorised to issue pound-notes was refused as a bill of exchange in
England. Any trader has the right to refuse to accept any note, and so
it's common practice now in Euroland for small chains to refuse to
accept notes worth 100, 200 and 500 euros, because of fears over
counterfeiting.
On the other side of the coin [sic] High Street traders in England,
which is not a part of Euroland (yet -- Ed.) will cheerfully accept
Euro notes in payment, treating them as de facto bills of exchange
regardless of the fact that the Euro is not legal tender in Britain.
So there you are.
