:held accountable by the O.A.S.," he said as Secretary of State
:Condoleezza Rice stood beside him. Ms. Rice and other American
:officials had wrested that remark from him in exchange for American
:support for his candidacy.
The doublespeak at the beginning is Rice's fingerprint. She almost
certainly wrote that, and of course it is a direct reference to
Venezuela.
This is part of the Bush administration's attempt to build political
structures throughourt the world that will automatically do
Washington's bidding. Assuming it will fail, or hoping that it will
fail is not an adequate response.

Indeed it is. And deservedly so. Hugo Chavez is the perfect example of
the sort of "elected" dictator that the Left lionizes, as long as they
don't have to live under his rule.

An insult considering US support of Brazil's generals, the
Argentine military, the overthrow of Allende and support for Pinochet,
overthrow of the Guzman government of Nicargua and support of Somoza
and later the murdering ex-Somoza guards, support for the genocidal
coup leader of Guatemala, Rios Montt, and other outrages over 35 years.
As if Washington has any credibility or understanding
of these things.

Perhaps first the US should concentrate on monitoring the quality of
democracy and excercise of power in the US.
