Obelisk looted by Mussolini begins journey to Ethiopia

For Rome it is just another ancient pile of granite, standing at a
busy traffic junction a few metres from where emperors watched chariot
races. But for Ethiopia the obelisk of Axum is a 2,000-year-old symbol
of their nation and culture, stolen by Mussolini in the 1930s. Now it
is finally going home.
Keeping a promise more than 50 years old, engineers yesterday laboured
to dismantle the top section, which is 7 metres (23 feet) high and
weighs 48 tons.
