Niall Stanage has written an interesting comment in response to my last
column, but it suffers from one small drawback: it doesn't address the
point I was making. My point is that the forces of occupation will
always become oppressive. This holds irrespective of whether or not you
believe that one side or the other has the moral high ground.
Occupations become brutal as an inevitable result of the political and
psychological position of the occupying forces. Niall seems to be
suffering from the misapprehension that I support the killings carried
out by the insurgents in Iraq. He provides no evidence for this, and I
suggest he would struggle to find it.
