OT: Off to the US |
For the first time since I left the US after a year in Richmond Va in 1990 my
firm have decided to send me for a short jaunt to the US. Fortunately and quite
coincidentally this business trip will also incorporate a weekend in
Kennebunkport, Maine where I will attend my nephew's wedding to a nice American
girl he met while working in NYC. Incredibly, my accommodations in
Kennebunkport will be at the Franciscan Monastery guest house - I'm hoping I
don't have to attend morning prayers!
I then fly on to Memphis, where I will spend most of the week inside a factory
testing machinery (I am an electrical engineer). There will precious little
time for sightseeing so Graceland is probably out. However, the company will be
providing an apartment within walking distance of Beale Street so I can at least
sample the delights of the birthplace of rock and roll.
No doubt I will be subjected the full blast of American electioneering but I am
only hoping that "Jeopardy" is still on the TV (the only decent show on network
TV - at least in 1990) with that Canadian guy hosting. Otherwise I am banking on
one of the cable channels endlessly repeating episodes of the Simpsons, Stargate
or Star Trek, and Discovery or PBS repeating Nova type science documentaries.
Sadly, I was informed recently that the BBC has stopped broadcasting shortwave
to N America, to the consternation of many, so I may not bring my shortwave
receiver.

The "historic" portion of Beale is only a few blocks long, so you can get a
good feel for it in a couple of hours or less. Check out New Daisy Theatre,
I've seen several good bands there.

Jeopardy is still on, with Trebek still as host.
