Object: OT: Oh I remember this...
The Chronicle has a picture of bumper to bumper evacuation traffic.
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/ssistory.mpl/topstory/3364562
They're supposed to contra-flow parts of I-10, I-45, and 290 today to try
to relieve some of the gridlock.
"Traffic reporters were reporting predawn drive times ranging as long
as 13 hours from Friendswood to Conroe as mandatory evacuations in
Galveston"
Damn, that's worse than what was happening over here. Took me over 6 hours
to go 100 miles. They're taking 13 to go 60. That's not good...

How does this kind of gridlock form? I'm baffled that things have gotten so
bad.

My parents live in Houston and were thinking about coming up here to
Dallas to escape Rita, but they're afraid they'd run out of gas on the
road, stuck in all the traffic. Apparently gas stations are running
out of gas all around there, so it's a real mess. They said they're
likely to be without power for possibly a week if things get bad, and
aren't looking forward to it. Can you imagine Houston this time of
year with no air conditioning?

Already they're running out which is disturbing. We're still almost two
days from landfall.

I kinda can though we only spent about two days after getting back being
without AC. Having to do that for a week is... awful...

My dad said his car was near empty so he drove around last night
trying to fill up, but half the stations were closed, and the other
half had huge lines, and he was afraid he was gonna run outta
gas while waiting in line, so he ended up going back home. I guess
he's gonna board up the windows and stick it out there.

It's enough to make one wanna buy a little generator to run at least a
few things and a good-sized tank of gas to keep it going for a week or
so. If things got really bad you could use the gas to fill up the car
and get outta town..
I spent a few summers in Houston years ago, and one time the power was
out in the neighborhood for two days, and it was absolutely awful. It
was rainy and no wind and humid as hell. We went to a lot of movies
on the other side of town, and into the malls to stay cool. If the
whole city was without power it'd be a nightmare...

All we need is for the thing to swing towards wherever they're going

Well, with her present track, she'll basically chase everybody that went
North right into Dallas. May sit over Eastern Texas and dump as much as
three feet (yes, feet) of rain.

Got to have someplace for the household goodies. Plus if your

If your home gets destroyed, you can drop the boat in one of
Houston's lakes and live there for awhile until you get
things straigtened out. Later you can sell the boat for ready
cash. It makes a good trailor in the mean time to haul away
clothing and other needs.
It makes perfect sense if you have a low lying home
that may not be there after a category 5 hurricane.

I was briefly on a Houston based web "forum" piece of crap (don't remember

Houston) already congratulating themselves for doing things "right" as
opposed to those New Orleans idiots. As traffic was gridlocking, as the
traffic jam was 100 miles long, as the local news and CNN were starting to
do stories of "what went wrong?", as people were running out of gas and
being stranded along the highways...
I saw people in Texas post messages of how Nagin should turn on the TV and
see how an evacuation is done.
I also learned that it was good Texas evacuated *before the storm unlike
those idiots in New Orleans.

They're supposed to contra-flow parts of I-10, I-45, and 290 today to
try to relieve some of the gridlock.

"Traffic reporters were reporting predawn drive times ranging as long
as 13 hours from Friendswood to Conroe as mandatory evacuations in
Galveston"

Damn, that's worse than what was happening over here. Took me over 6
hours to go 100 miles. They're taking 13 to go 60. That's not good...

Someone in the area posted to another list I'm on that she and her
family were drving all their cars out of town.

I guess they didn't make the same good plans as they did in NO and tell
people not to do that.

Not just that but people are taking their *boats* for crying out loud.

Houston's in serious danger of gridlocking.

I notice they had no contra-flow plan at all and are trying to slap it in
at the last minute...

Gee where's Fred's heartfelt apology and that idiot in Australia who
should be groveling right now?

Listen...

I was briefly on a Houston based web "forum" piece of crap (don't remember
why I bothered exactly) and found people (at least one Austin, not
Houston) already congratulating themselves for doing things "right" as
opposed to those New Orleans idiots. As traffic was gridlocking, as the
traffic jam was 100 miles long, as the local news and CNN were starting to
do stories of "what went wrong?", as people were running out of gas and
being stranded along the highways...

Not to mention that evacuating so far before the hurricane hits means
they weren't going in the right direction because it isn't predictable
where the hurricane will go.

I saw people in Texas post messages of how Nagin should turn on the TV and
see how an evacuation is done.

I also learned that it was good Texas evacuated *before the storm unlike
those idiots in New Orleans.

This isn't "partisan." This is disconnecting from reality. Actual
delusional systems.

And under our system of government, these people can vote...

High ground away from the coast is usually a good idea. Being in a area
subject to storm surge is a bad one.

That was the first thing I noticed when they posted a pic on CNN. Why
do have better traffic planning for football games than we have for a
category 5 hurricane?

Priorities. Football is much more important.

That was the first thing I noticed when they posted a pic on CNN. Why
do have better traffic planning for football games than we have for a
category 5 hurricane?

Several reasons.
You have a small number of vehicles moving away from a single point rather
than a huge number converging on a few routes.
The main reason is that there is just not enough room for all those
vehicles.
I had a class in LA in the 80's. It started at 7:30 am so people could avoid
the busy traffic time.
Five lanes, no rain, and no traffic accidents the average was about 25 mph.
It rained a little one morning and it was about 10 mph stop and go for as
far as the eye could see to the front and at least 25 miles to the rear.
It's pretty hard to drive through LA during the day without being slowed to
a stop at least once by traffic no matter how many lanes there are.
Imagine if all the cars had to take two or three of those roads.
One accident and a lane is blocked and you can have *miles* of cars which
can't get out of that lane.
