I read that some of the flooded areas in those photos have since dried up
somewhat, so there wasn't as much loss of land as previously thought. Also,
some Thai's are now glad that at least the beaches are back to what they
used to be 20 years ago, before all the development.

Really.
You know Indonesia is literally *missing whole towns? I saw one mentioned
that had a population of 76,000 that they can't seem to *find now. Aerial
surveillance shows nothing but a few foundations here and there and
*nobody around.
It's one of the most disturbing things I've heard in my entire life...

I saw one picture a few days ago. The eye follows the shoreline, notes a
building (maybe a resort or hotel) in the background, and what at first
looks like a huge pile of rubble--shattered lumber, strips of cloth,
cushions...
Then you see a leg. Then bodies.

I was thinking it wasn't even that big of a wave, compared with what's
possible, especially when you here people talk about it being 20 to 30 feet
high. Then I realized, there's no video from these places in Indonesia that
were completely obliterated, and no eyewitness reports. All that's coming
from the places where the wave was small enough not to kill everyone.

The tourists with the cameras had the luxury of a solid building and
vantage places above the waves. It is estimated that 440 Brits may
have died in the Tsunami.

The area was also one of the most popular ones for Swedish people to
go vacationing at, and a plenty of Swedes went there over
christmas/newyear.
I think everyone I have talked to knows someone who is either
confirmed dead or still missing.
I was in the area the days before the catastrophe, visiting Cambodia
but got back home just before disaster struck. At the airport in Phnom
Penh (Cambodia), I met some Swedish people on vacation going to Kao
Lhak and Phuket. I have no idea if they made it.

I can't imagine. For the size of the population, the number of people
missing is staggering. Be something like 100,000 USers in relative terms.
Which is rather hard to get your mind around.

Yes, it is a disaster of proportions that are quite staggering. I am
glad I decided not to take a vacation in the area, sometimes I do that
when the job brings me to a nice spot. However, just before I went off
to SE Asia I got a new girlfriend and so I was eager to get back home.
I guess I was rather lucky but I have a hard time to feel happy about
it because of so many other people who had their whole livesruined,
who lost people close to them, children...

I remember feeling a bit like that when hurricane Ivan missed us. We
evacuated (which was a nightmare) only to have it turn enough to leave our
area totally untouched. I felt a little guilty for feeling relieved seeing
the pictures that came out of Florida and Mississippi.

able to feel relief if one escapes harm.
