Aww man...what a bloody nightmare !
Windows screwed up good and proper.
(Tried to install the Colin Mcrae rally 2005 demo)
It shut the pc down.....and wouldn't re-boot.
Refused to go into safe mode...refused to load last known configuration.
Nothing..diddly squat !!
So I ended up having to bloody well Re-Install Windows !!!
Ahhhhh
3 & 1/2 years of bookmarks....gone.
3 & 1/2 years of e-mails......gone. !!
Thank ***** I have all my music compositions on another drive !!
That would have been a catastrophe !!
So the first sunny Saturday we get in ages....and I had to spend it
re-installing all my damned software !!
AHhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Not going to buy that bloody game now, that's for sure !!
I need a damned beer.

I just bought a new laptop with all the bells and whistles
and it won't work with anything but XP or DOS 6 (no linux,
no 95/98/NT, nothing). The documentation says otherwise,
the so-called "tech support" tells me to reinstall XP (If
I wanted to use it, why did I remove it?) and they still
insist that it will work with all OS even after I proved
it by demonstration in their store.
The only good point: the unnamed chain store has a 1-year
"no questions asked" return policy and I still have the
receipt.

I use Basic Linux which you can run from DOS (but not from
Windows), though I haven't yet figured out how to install
software. It's small and stable, but probably limited in
what it can do.

Hehehe..go for it..

I took it back...the idiot salesman calls the factory to find
out why it won't work with 95 or 98: it was built only for XP.
Since I asked the moron to check before I bought it, it begs
the question of why he didn't. Clearly, it was to get product
out the door, not give me what I wanted.
I took it back. Now I have my money, and they have a laptop
they have to reinstall and probably refurbish to sell at a
loss (no, I didn't damage it). All for the lack of a phone
call by them. 9_9
And I still don't have a new laptop.

Search the Linux area and you'll get info on what laptops are linux

Yeah just the boot partition...it wouldn't allow a re-install without one.

Yes indeed ! I learnt that a long time ago.
The thing I found odd was with Win98se..it would allow you to re-install
Windows, while leaving the old installation there...so you ended up with
a Windows folder...and a Windows01 folder...which you could then
transfer all your data from, but XP didn't offer that option !
Ho hum !

LOL....it took over 3 years to screw-up. And then because of a stupid

Sighhhhh. Backing up stuff is not that hard.
A cheap CD-RW and a pack of CDRs isn't
that expensive. Backing up the ol' e-mail
and bookmarks isn't hard.
When was the last time everybody here bothered?
What if tomorrow your hard disk died? Would you be
here moaning and saying "I wish I had bothered to
back it up"?
I just upgraded my linux system CDrecord SW and
backed up everything. I can afford to be smug.
Anybody here not bothered to back up anything
in the last year?

Notice that while OE is automatically installed in the "Program Files" subtree,
a) with some difficulty the latter can usually be relocated off the OS partition, b) with
greater difficulty OE can be relocated elsewhere (though both of the above may not obtain
in XP) but most usefully for this case c) OE always supports the option (under the
options|maintenance menu) of putting the storage dircetory anywhere the user spaces into
putting it. Keeping it off the OS partition is *strongly* recommended by this writer.

Not going to buy that bloody game now, that's for sure !!

I need a damned beer.

Keep all the critical stuff *off* the OS partion.

Ho hum !

Your email stuff is still there, and accessible.

Urm, well, there's the rub....they were in Outlook express..which was on
the OS partition.

In short, use any other email program.

A matter of taste.
None of the others *that I've tried* is satisfactory, for my purposes.
Those that have come somewhere near, have had some fatal flaw, such as an inability
to import existing accounts, with their settings, from a standing installation of O.E.,
or having non-intuitive operations, or being based on "a new paradigm" that makes
e-mail as I've come to appreciate it impossible.
Most recently, the standalone mail client for Firefox (name escapes me at the moment)
was still in alpha, performance-wise, when I tried it, a scant couple of months ago. Same
story for the client that grew out of SpamAssassin (its name also escapes me.)
Maybe I'd find better results from one of the old standards that run on Linux, but I'm not
going to Linux, except as an extreme pain-in-the-***** marginal hobby, until there's a
usable pointer available, i.e. one that isn't microscopic, and will track across the
desktop in real time, without spraining my arm. Linux is too psychologically abusive
for me in the mean time, with all its secret, undocumented or illegibly documented,
had-to-be-born-using-them apps.

It shut the pc down.....and wouldn't re-boot.
Refused to go into safe mode...refused to load last known

Nothing..diddly squat !!

So I ended up having to bloody well Re-Install Windows !!!

Ahhhhh
3 & 1/2 years of bookmarks....gone.
3 & 1/2 years of e-mails......gone. !!

If you had an extra hard drive, you could have put Windows on it and at
least saved your bookmarks and emails.

Thank ***** I have all my music compositions on another drive !!
That would have been a catastrophe !!

What kinds of music do you compose?

Hmmm indeed. Windows was on boot C drive...along with my e-mail prog and
browsers....and most of my software, but all my Music and assorted junk
is on a different HDD...so at least they are all safe.
Not much of a trouble to re-load the software, I still have all the
discs, but it is a bloody annoyance.
I'll have to back-up my e-mail stuff on a separate drive in future, but
as for the software, it doesn't matter where it is, 'cos after
re-installing windows it can't find them anyway..all the registry
entries get cleaned out....
Ho hum !

All kinds of junk...some bits can be found at

Dunno where my Classical Guitar stuff is though...thought I'd up-loaded
some...gawd, more damned messing about to come.
Man my site looks a mess without the correct fonts installed !!
Should be 'papyrus'.....
Here goes font re-installation.

So what? The old email proggy and files are all still there (provided
they're on another partion). Simply rename the old email proggy.
You'll be able to access everything there from 'explorer' via the
'email.exe' file.
