The president of Gambia has announced the discovery of "large
quantities" of oil in his tiny West African country, the latest
revelation of petrochemical riches in sub-Saharan Africa.
In a national broadcast Yahya Jammeh, who seized control of the former
British colony in a military coup 10 years ago, said the offshore
discovery by a western company would result in "a harvest of
prosperity".
