The Coast Guard has always been the red-headed stepchild of the
military: undefunded, and underrespected for the tremendous job it
does. I read somewhere the Coast Guard saves over 100,000 lives a year
on average. That's amazing. Thye rescued over 20,000 people during and
after Katrina. Seems to me they're worth every penny. It has always
suffered from an aging fleet and outdated communications, but it gets
the job done nonethless.
Obviously, being an effective organization, they are just screaming to
be privatized, and I remember some discussion way back that the
wingnuts wanted to privatize or disband the Coast Guard altogether.
Something about an agency that actualy does something positive for the
country that rubs them the wrong way I guess.

Sounds like their old "starve the beast" or "drown it in a tub" tactic. I
mean, if you want to convince people government "doesn't work" you gotta
be damn sure it doesn't!

They'll probably get their budget cut for that. They're obviously way
over-funded.

Is there some bureaucratic analog to the Peter Principle: Any unit
within a bureaucracy that is able to accomplish its mission will have
its funding reduced until it is no longer able to do so.

Just the best there is, that's all.
Funny, but when I was in the USCG, it was part of the Dept. of
Transportation, and we did a great job there.
Then, Clueless George gets hold of them, and shoves them under the new
SS, and they still do a great job.
Nice to see that some things, never change.

Isn't that ever true? How many times have we seen an idiotic leader, in

Funny, but when I was in the USCG, it was part of the Dept. of
Transportation, and we did a great job there.
Then, Clueless George gets hold of them, and shoves them under
the
new
SS, and they still do a great job.
Nice to see that some things, never change.
Good people can make a destroyed system function.
Isn't that ever true? How many times have we seen an idiotic
leader,
in
politics, business, or anywhere else get his butt saved by
competent
subordinates. But guess who gets the credit and/or the big
paycheck?
The person who sits on his/her arse and doesn't do a lick of work.
You got it!
They also have [generally] made a career out of sucking hind tit.
They wouldn't be where they are if they didn't.
Point. I wish it wasn't and such was generated by competance.
I never was interested in the politics game.
It seems that in recent times, the most competent don't go into
politics. They tend to go into industry, or sometimes academia, leaving
the less qualified wannabees to run for public office and make law
concerning all of us. No wonder the system sucks. The monkey in the White
House is a textbook case.
In this case I was speaking of industry/company/workplace politics.
There is analogy though. In business, like politics, people who get to
the top are not necessarily the most qualified or most experienced in
their field. Their main qualifications are how to spin a good yarn, how
to convince peers and superiors that they are hot, even it they are not,
and which are the most appropriate backsides to kiss and backs to stab.
I've seen it all too often in industry and politics.

Military Reprimands Navy Rescuers
Two Navy helicopter pilots were reprimanded for their
actions after Hurricane Katrina struck - they rescued
more than 100 people and brought them to safety.
Lt. David Shand and Lt. Matt Udkow each piloted H-3
helicopters out of Pensacola, Fla., and were ordered to
deliver emergency food, water and other supplies to
Stennis Space Center in Mississippi on Tuesday, August
30, the day after Katrina made landfall.
The fact that they had delivered all supplies they were sent
to give and had time to rescue the people before sunset was
unimportant.
