OT: OPEC Nations Reject Pleas to Increase Their Quotas |
New York Times
AMSTERDAM, May 22 =97 The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries=20
will make no immediate adjustments to its current quotas, despite Saudi=20
Arabian lobbying to increase production levels to alleviate high prices.
Members of OPEC, the oil cartel that controls over a third of the=20
world's production, met on Saturday in Amsterdam to discuss various=20
proposals, but no changes will be decided on before a June 3 meeting in=20
Lebanon, the organization's president, Purnomo Yusgiantoro of Indonesia,=20
told reporters on Saturday.

Their duty is not to us, but to their own people. I would not fault=20
them for trying to get top dollar as they sell off a finite resource=20
which also happens to be their only resource. When they act otherwise,=20
we should be very suspicious. And when they act otherwise, and it works=20
to the advantage of the current administration in an election year, I'll=20
know damn good an well that the Saudis are voting in the American=20
presidential election.

The Saudis pop off at Shrub's behest. Quelle surprise.

Exactly, and that's what Chavez is doing in Venezuela (with
the CIA breathing down his neck). I guess capitalism and
charging what the market will bear isn't okay if the US is
hit by the high prices.
Why is it that when oil is at a higher price that the US
wants to pay (but can still afford to) it's criminal, yet
when the third worlds needs anti-AIDS and other drugs that
they can't afford (but desperately want) it's criminal for
them to ask for lower prices? The hypocrisy is astounding.

I wanna know why we don't start using more of our reserves around
here to lower the price. Also, why don't we start doing more drilling
and exploration in our country instead of being so dependent on
foreign oil?

When you think about it, it makes sense in the long term to keep our
reserves in reserve and use up the rest of the world's oil. Then when
theirs is all gone, we still have some and can really dominate the rest
of the world. A repug's wet dream.

What would we do at that point? Hog it all ourselves to fuel our
SUV's and war machines, or sell small parts of it off at enormous
markups?
Personally, I'm a semi-environmentalist, but I think it's wrong for
us to wage war with other countries just to control their oil. I'd
rather we put up with the occasional oil spills here in our country
rather than having to watch people die half way across the world,
in some battle for oil, which I see as part of the reason for the
Iraq war.

That doesn't do very much. "Releasing reserves" is more political than economic.
Also, why don't we start doing more drilling and
exploration in our country instead of being so dependent on foreign oil?
Several reasons.
Environmentalists don't want us to drill in Alaska, or anywhere else (some
more so than others)
People living on the coast don't want oil platforms obstructing their
scenic views.
Politicians don't want to anger voters, and can shield themselves by
blaming OPEC.
And much of the oil that is currently available for drilling is still more
expensive to pump and refine than is the imported oil.
That's the reason OPEC has to be careful. If the price goes too high, we
WILL pump our own, and we WILL start using more alternative energy sources.

I'm waiting for the Bushites to use this as an excuse to get drilling
rights for their buddies in ANWR. Let's just go up and shoot all of
those pesky polar bears and caribou!
