Within 20 years computers will be everywhere, and they'll all be
talking to each other. Daunting? Not if we're prepared, says a group
of British scientists. Richard Sarson reports

So, congratulations to Tim Berners-Lee - now Sir Tim, after his
achievement in inventing the World Wide Web all those years ago in
1991, while tinkering on a NeXT computer in search of a way for all
the scientists at CERN, the European particle research lab, to
collaborate on each others' work.

Charles Darwin's dangerous discovery was that nature, through natural
selection, could be as creative as a conscious designer. The discovery
was dangerous because it made God redundant as the architect of
nature. Some people still have difficulty with that.
Nearly 150 years on, is it time to set the power of natural selection
free on public services? The idea appears in a Demos booklet that will
be of interest to anyone wondering where e-government could take us.

Google is now the world's most powerful website, and if it goes public
this year, its young founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, will become
extremely rich. Their five-year-old company has already cracked its
biggest problem, which is how to make pots of money from selling
advertising space without carrying any banner ads. And while there are
other places to search the web, most websites are now dependent on
Google for a large proportion of their new visitors. The question that
drives all but a few commercial webmasters today is: "How do I change
my site to make it appear on the first page when someone searches
Google?"
