Object: O.T. optics and color people
I am a gun nutt. I compete in shooting golf balls/eggs/ small balloons
at 200 yards. Not as hard as it sounds from a sand bag. In fact it is
so easy we are only allow 6X scopes.
My problem, eyesight, I wear bifocals. So if I look at the first lens
which is 5 inches away is in fact my focal point 5 inches. The scope
has what is called spider web cross hairs with a 1/8 moa dot in the
middle. Would short range lenses like reading glasses help me see the
cross hairs?
Next problem, the golf balls are hung in front of old black conveyor
belts. Others can see my cross hairs while they are in the black, but
I can not. I was thinking of getting a sports lens that had my
prescription for maximum acuity at 5 inches and some tint that would
help. So far they are suggesting tints with yellow in them like brown,
orange, green, or just plain yellow. This is done in a very bright
area at noon, so yellow would not be good (yellow enhances the border
between black and white, which probably wouldn't help here being black
on black.)
Thanks
Jim

Why don't you borrow a suitable pair and find out?
Or dispense with spectacles entirely and refocus the scope to
accomodate?
If you still have trouble after doing that, I'd get a checkup from a
qualified optometrist, (not a cardiologist), as this may well indicate
a condition that cannot be ophthalmically accomodated, but may relate
to some other undiagnosed problem, such as high intra-ocular pressure.
My 30 day invoice is in the mail. ;)

Check is in the mail. I have an astigmatism, so I don't think I can
buy
reading glasses over the counter. what I am going to try is tilt my
head back and look through the lower lens of the bifocal. Someone said
that scopes are designed to be used without glasses.
Now all I have to do is get my lazy butt out to the range.
and hope the other shooters have forgiven me for contradicting what
they told me with something I read on the Internet.

My associate Peter is an Aussie ex Viet Vet, and is a qualified
firearms instructor, from whom I have culled the following info for
you:
Yes, most scopes are designed to be used without prescription lenses,
but WITH protective eyewear.
He knows of no-one, not even Olympic shooters who have scopes
specially adapted to their optical script.
(And he trains and competes with Australian Olympic shooters.)
He advises: Buy the best scope that you can afford. Nothing under
AU$1000.
(Whatever that turns out to be in USA Pesos.)
You gets what you pays for, especially in scopes.
Get one with an red illuminated reticle.
Ditch your spex whilst actually shooting, (and substitute them with
clear protective units).
With an illuminated reticle astigmatism is not normally an issue,
unless it is extreme.
(How much is it in the eye that you sight with, by the way?
In: Sphere/Cyl dioptres, and Cyl Angle.
It'll be on your ophthalmic prescription.
You have already paid for my consulting fee, so don't worry!)
A good scope will be able to focus for you at any distance.
This should eliminate your problem entirely.
He suggests "Nightforce" scopes as a good option. (Idaho)

or
http://tinyurl.com/fnlwn
The MLR or the NP-R2 would be good candidates.
You can ask Nightforce directly about special needs on (208)476-9814
Peter also suggests that you find out what scopes the US military are
currently using, as they have already done the testing for you.
Quite how such investigations will sit with your Homeland Insecurity
Department is another issue...
Hope this helps a fellow shooter.

For some reason I thought of "Support Your Local Sherrif" where Garner has
his prospective employer toss a washer in the air and shoots through the
hole. A great film.
But we are not answering the man's question.
Eris.
Have you considered getting a pair of glasses that are not bi-focal? I have
one pair I use just for working on my computer and it's great.
If you do that and need the bifocals make sure the frames are a *lot*
different.
I've left the house a few times and found the road to be a bit fuzzy.
