OT: Oregon Gas Pumps |

Old-Style Pumps Can't Register $3 Per Gallon
Stations Calculating Half Gallons
PORTLAND -- Gas prices are getting too high for the old pumps to
handle.
gasIt was absurd to think that gasoline prices would reach $3 a gallon
when some of the old-style gas pumps were built.
Some still in use are unable to register prices beyond $2.99 per
gallon.
A specialist estimates about 200 to 500 of the old pumps still operate
in Oregon.
The two companies that produce kits to retrofit the old pumps are sold
out. As a temporary fix, owners of the pumps are being told to label
their pump prices as the cost of a half-gallon. That requires the
total price to be multiplied by two.

Old style?
There are still a few pumps with ragged holes cut to allow for amounts over
a dollar.

I filled up at the only pump dead center between Ely and Tonopah, NV
(about 170 miles) last weekend on a round-trip bike ride from LA to SLC.
I went into the store to pay first and the guy just said "the pump's
on." Good thing I'm old enough to remember those days.
Too bad the gas was 3.25 a gallon, but all he had was 89 octane.
