The Observer
Jan Lieban traces an 80-year-old finger down a list of names and stops
at his own, inked in the uneven letters of a manual typewriter. He is
studying a copy of Schindler's list and recalling the 'angel' who
saved his life.
Lieban was one of more than 1,000 Jews rescued from the Holocaust when
Oskar Schindler persuaded the Nazis that they were needed to work in
his factory. Many have since died from old age or moved abroad. But
Lieban is the sole survivor of the list still in Krakow, where the
pre-war population of 78,000 practising religious Jews has fallen to
just 150 today.
