"Do you take tea with your sugar?" asks Alper Mehmet, the newly
appointed British ambassador to Iceland. As the water in the kettle
begins to boil, his mother, Leman, tells me about the calls of
congratulations that have been steadily flowing since the announcement
of her son's promotion to the most senior level of the British
diplomatic service. "One relative called yesterday and said how proud
everyone in the village was, and that everyone congratulated Alper. He
said it was as if the whole village had been made ambassador," she
beams. As she talks, Mehmet's father, Bekir, breaks into a silent sob,
overwhelmed with emotion at his son's momentous achievement.
