The Australian government angered the Aboriginal population yesterday
by announcing plans to abolish an elected commission set up to give
them control of their own affairs.
Legislation will be introduced next month to scrap the Aboriginal and
Torres Strait Islander Commission (Atsic), effective immediately. The
Prime Minister, John Howard, said: "We believe very strongly that the
experiment in elected representation for indigenous people has been a
failure." The institution would not be replaced, he said.

I think that the dismantling of ATSIC is only the second sensible thing that
the Howard government has done in all it's time in office. (The first was
the gun laws) Of course the only reason they did it was because Labour had
already promised to do it and looked like winning them votes. ATSIC had
become a corrupt and useless beurocrasy, filling the pockets of a select few
who are about as aboriginal as I am. I used to have an indigenous friend
who worked for ATSIC and she used to tell me stunning stories about how
corrupt and dishonest the whole hierarchy of the commission was. She told
me 6 years ago that the entire organization should have been scrapped and
started from scratch, but that no-one dared speak out for fear of being
sacked or persecuted. Of course what it will be replaced with will just be
another attempt by Howard to add a few more strings to his personal puppet
show. Can you believe that whole thing about making Richard Alston the head
of Telstra? If they get voted in again, this entire stupid fucking country
deserves everything it gets!!!

I always wondered if Alston (and perhaps other agents in the Howard government)
was involved in the "disappearance" of Australian internet free-speech activist
Bernadette Taylor several years ago.

Yeah...well, my trusty .177 air rifle that worked really well got
crushed by the aussie government and I never got compensated for
it....and it had cost me 199 bucks or something when I bought it. So
basically, they robbed me of my air rifle. I don't mind gun laws
actually, but when they took my gun without reimbursing me...then
that's what I call robbery.

I hope you'll forgive me for taking this even farther off
topic. Keep in mind that this is coming from a rural American
who grew up in an environment in which firearms were found in
every home and virtually everyone, male and female, learned to
shoot and hunt at an early age; where I live the same is still
pretty much the rule. Firearm violence seems to me to be
pretty rare here. I know of only one shooting in this county
of just under 8,000 residents since 1977. I know of two
others in which county residents were involved, one in which
two locals were killed, the other in which a local man shot
his boss and several other people, that took place elsewhere.
I remember reading about the Tasmanian incident some years ago
in misc.rural, but I have to admit the details have slipped my
mind. The discussion of the aftermath tended to have an
American NRA bias suggesting that if we weren't careful the
government would come and confiscate our guns just like they
were doing in Australia, and the next thing we knew we'd be
saluting a guy with a funny brush under his nose. The NRA,
like most extremist groups or individuals, doesn't take great
care to recognize differing points of view in anything like a
respectful manner, so I tended to disregard their rants.
The above, however, gave me pause. Was the air rifle
confiscated? Or was it some kind of voluntary program? Are
private individuals prohibited from owning firearms? Or are
they required to meet some qualifications?

I guess I can't complain; I asked for that. You managed to
include a pretty good selection of anti-American stereotypes
in a relatively short paragraph. Still, I'm curious. Has
your government confiscated all weapons right down to air
rifles? In a country such as yours with so many deadly
animals and so much open space, such a move seems
counterproductive. As to violence against other people, the
philosophy that those bent upon attacking their peers will be
prevented from doing so if law abiding people are disarmed
doesn't seem reasonable to me, though the attitude is shared
by many urban Americans. Feel free to resume your attack.

I think that the dismantling of ATSIC is only the second sensible thing

that

the Howard government has done in all it's time in office. (The first

was

the gun laws) Of course the only reason they did it was because Labour

had

already promised to do it and looked like winning them votes. ATSIC had
become a corrupt and useless beurocrasy, filling the pockets of a select

few

who are about as aboriginal as I am. I used to have an indigenous

friend

who worked for ATSIC and she used to tell me stunning stories about how
corrupt and dishonest the whole hierarchy of the commission was. She

told

me 6 years ago that the entire organization should have been scrapped

and

started from scratch, but that no-one dared speak out for fear of being
sacked or persecuted. Of course what it will be replaced with will just

be

another attempt by Howard to add a few more strings to his personal

puppet

show. Can you believe that whole thing about making Richard Alston the

head

of Telstra? If they get voted in again, this entire stupid fucking

country

deserves everything it gets!!!

Kenny L.

Well that's wrong. Why not? You should kick up a ***** storm for that!

Yeah....I think so! I doubt that the aussie government would want to
see a repeat of what happened in Tasmania which led to the gun laws.
But you know...if governments start to rob folks of things...then who
knows what kind of things could accidently happen in future.

Yeah...well, my trusty .177 air rifle that worked really well
got

And don't forget paper clips and rubber bands, as well as thumbtacks,
