The UN secretary general, Kofi Annan, yesterday appealed for US forces
to show restraint in any coming battle to purge the Sunni triangle,
including Falluja, of insurgents, and so prepare the way for elections
in Iraq in January.
Mr Annan, who has in the past declared the invasion of Iraq unlawful,
said it was now all hands on deck to achieve security and elections in
Iraq.
