Okay, I gotta ask...
You got any idea what is it about the movie "Hocus Pocus" that upsets
Wiccans and pagans?
(I know at least one pagan that just rants about it. I kinda... like it.
But, well, it is Bette Midler and if I don't keep up my twinkie points,
I'll lose my queer card!)

LOL - I LOVE that movie. I think it's hilarious and was thinking about
popping it in the VCR today :).
What probably upsets the Wiccans and pagans is that the three witches are
basically evil hags that like to murder children to steal their "life
essence", which keeps them young. They're still a freakin' hoot though :)
(I know at least one pagan that just rants about it. I kinda... like it.

She is truly hilarious in this movie - "Don't get your knickers in a twist!
We're just a bunch of old spinster ladies!"
I think the bottom line is that it does portray witchcraft as evil and that
has a tendency to ***** off the Wiccan/pagan community. Honestly? IT'S A
FREAKING KIDS' MOVIE AND SHOULDN'T BE TAKEN AS A SERIOUS PORTRAYAL OF
WITCHES!"
But that's just me :)

I think it has a lot to do with a 'shadow sexual orientation' fantasy, i.e.
"if I were a woman (not necessarily un unpleasant thought experiment,
long as it's part-time, and doesn't become binding) I'd like to try being
with a woman in a way I can never experience as a man." That, and the
visuals . . .

Ah hah, gotcha :)
I was also thinking about putting in my "Sleepy Hollow" DVD and listening to
Tim Burton's commentary. Would be nice background noise for painting. Want
to get together a few more pieces in my "Halloween Collection". I also need
to put up the Halloween decorations.
What probably upsets the Wiccans and pagans is that the three witches are
basically evil hags that like to murder children to steal their "life
essence", which keeps them young. They're still a freakin' hoot though
:)
Well, yeah... but... well...
(I know at least one pagan that just rants about it. I kinda... like it.
But, well, it is Bette Midler and if I don't keep up my twinkie points,
I'll lose my queer card!)
She is truly hilarious in this movie - "Don't get your knickers in a

"Queer as Farts" on Showtime...
Boogers, I don't get Showtime. What was it about?
About the fantasies of two tired old Hollywood queens that near as I can
tell are about as self-loathing a pair as possible. It's also about an
hour too long and has gone on four seasons too many. And far as I'm
concerned is largely concerned with making gays look like unrelentingly
nasty people who do nothing but ***** and dance and have about as much
sense of personal responsibility as a box of rocks.
But, other people like it.
(Anyway... talking about you at your reunion, I just could not stop
imagining you on stage singing "I put a spell on you" <G>)
LOL! Now THAT would have been funny :)

Okay, I gotta ask...
You got any idea what is it about the movie "Hocus Pocus" that upsets
Wiccans and pagans?
LOL - I LOVE that movie. I think it's hilarious and was thinking about
popping it in the VCR today :).
I would too but I'd probably get in trouble. Sigh.
She is truly hilarious in this movie - "Don't get your knickers in a
twist! We're just a bunch of old spinster ladies!"
I think the bottom line is that it does portray witchcraft as evil and
that has a tendency to ***** off the Wiccan/pagan community. Honestly?
IT'S A FREAKING KIDS' MOVIE AND SHOULDN'T BE TAKEN AS A SERIOUS PORTRAYAL
OF WITCHES!"
But that's just me :)
I keep thinking the same thing.
Frankly, I found "The Craft" MUCH more annoying :P
And it could be worse too. Just look at (well, no, don't) that atrocity
"Queer as Farts" on Showtime...

Unfortunately, a great many people *are* idiots, Robyn. As I know you've had
experience with. It is not the general viewing public that upsets Wiccans and
Pagans about this movie. They are upset because some people -- enough people,
apparently -- see even a silly movie like this as justification for their
bigotry and hatred. There are also a "minstral show" aspect to the movie that
annoy a great many practicing Witches.
I found the movie to be typical Disney fare, barely worth a second glance
(except for Bette Midler and Kathy Najimy, I would never have seen it.) It
certainly isn't anything that annoys me, other than the usual Disney saccharine
coating and an ending that makes maple syrup taste bitter. But I can see why
people get upset over it.

See, this is exactly what I'm talking about. People getting all upset
about
a stupid Disney movie and blowing out of proportion. Whatever.
*I'm* not one of them, I assure you :-)
"Dont get your knickers in a twist! We're just a bunch of old
freethinkers!" :-P
Har de har har. I'm honestly surprised you're don't see the
difference. The characters in the movie were NOT Wiccans and/or Pagans.
They were cartoon-like representations of Salem witches - which any
idiot should know
never existed.
Unfortunately, a great many people *are* idiots, Robyn. As I know you've
had
experience with. It is not the general viewing public that upsets
Wiccans and
Pagans about this movie. They are upset because some people -- enough
people,
apparently -- see even a silly movie like this as justification for
their bigotry and hatred. There are also a "minstral show" aspect to the
movie that
annoy a great many practicing Witches.
I found the movie to be typical Disney fare, barely worth a second
glance (except for Bette Midler and Kathy Najimy, I would never have
seen it.) It certainly isn't anything that annoys me, other than the
usual Disney saccharine
coating and an ending that makes maple syrup taste bitter. But I can see
why
people get upset over it.
Well, I have to agree that I can see why SOME people might have a problem
with it, but I'm sure anyone bothered by that particular movie probably
has way too thin of a skin.
Sigh.
I won't be watching it here...
(I actually just asked about the movie and got snarled at)

Okay, I gotta ask...
You got any idea what is it about the movie "Hocus Pocus" that
upsets
Wiccans and pagans?
LOL - I LOVE that movie. I think it's hilarious and was thinking
about
popping it in the VCR today :).
What probably upsets the Wiccans and pagans is that the three witches
are
basically evil hags that like to murder children to steal their "life
essence", which keeps them young. They're still a freakin' hoot
though
:)
(I know at least one pagan that just rants about it. I kinda... like
it.
But, well, it is Bette Midler and if I don't keep up my twinkie
points,
I'll lose my queer card!)
She is truly hilarious in this movie - "Don't get your knickers in a
twist!
We're just a bunch of old spinster ladies!"
I think the bottom line is that it does portray witchcraft as evil and
that
has a tendency to ***** off the Wiccan/pagan community. Honestly?
IT'S A
FREAKING KIDS' MOVIE AND SHOULDN'T BE TAKEN AS A SERIOUS PORTRAYAL OF
WITCHES!"
But that's just me :)

I dunno. I have a real hard time associating the "witches" of European
folklore with, well, anything. You know "wicca" as it's called is a 20th
century invention?

Of couse I know that. I was a practicing Wiccan on and off for nearly 15 years
:-P
I still think Scott Cunningham's description is the most succinct: A modern
religion based on ancient archetypes. He became persona non grata among the
"orthodox" witches when he said this back in the 80's (that segment had a great
many other issues with him as well; this comment sealed his fate) but now it is
pretty much accepted. Fortunately, the myth of a direct and continuous, if
polluted, descent from pre-Christian pagan Europe has died a quiet death.
