Republicans defect to the Obama camp
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/us_and_americas/article1752381.ece
Sarah Baxter, Washington
DISILLUSIONED supporters of President George W Bush are defecting to
Barack Obama, the Democratic senator for Illinois, as the White House
candidate with the best chance of uniting a divided nation.
Tom Bernstein went to Yale University with Bush and co-owned the Texas
Rangers baseball team with him. In 2004 he donated the maximum $2,000
to the president's reelection campaign and gave $50,000 to the
Republican National Committee. This year he is switching his support
to Obama. He is one of many former Bush admirers who find the Democrat
newcomer appealing.

"In his speech, Obama called for an increase in defence spending and an
extra 65,000 soldiers and 27,000 marines to ³stay on the offense²
against terrorism and ensure America had ³the strongest, best-equipped
military in the world². He talked about building democracies, stopping
weapons of mass destruction and the right to take unilateral action to
protect US ³vital interests² if necessary, as well as the importance of
building alliances."
Apparently, the neo-cons have used and discarded both George Bush and
the Republicans, and they have found themselves a new Bush. "Black
Ronald Reagan" indeed.

our "vital interests".

Just because some neocons are saying doesn't mean it's true.

Nice speech. I like the part about how his grandfather allegedly fought
his way across Europe and heard the stories of how "fellow troops"
liberated Aushwitz. I take it his grandfather was in the Soviet army.
This guy basically just speaks a lot of meangingless mumbo-jumbo like
this, hoping that most people are too stupid to catch the fact that he
is either saying nothing, or talking *****. Mr I don't support "dumb"
wars is all for keeping "all options on the table" when it comes to
Iran, including the nuclear option. Iran is not our enemy, anymore than
Iraq was. We don't need another lying ***** trying to swindle us into
another war with promises of "harsh diplomacy" (threats of attack and
other bullying) but we do need to withdraw our military from the Middle
East and leave these people be. Any attack on Iran will only weaken the
US and increase terrorism, giving the Iranians and others a legitimate
reason for attacking us: self-defense.
Beyond that, this man is just another corporate ***** almost fully in
support of the Republicrats attempts to turn Americans into serfs in a
feudal theocracy. The biggest battles for democracy we as Americans
have to fight are right here at home, and not in the Middle East. *****

You should ask Jefferson Davis why he fired on Fort Sumter. There was
no need for a Civil War.. It could have been resoved by constitutional
means.
Soviet Union was our ally.

Of course not. He's talking more about leading by example and with
allies.

Don't silly. If he is a theocrat then Jefferson is also a theocrat.

This conflicts with several other studies which seem to show that
people who have serious issues with George W. Bush don't hold that
against other Republican candidates (unless they share Bush's views on
the issues that are the basis of their dissatisfaction).
Ask a Republican who is disgusted with Bush over the war if this makes
them more likely to vote for a Democratic candidate and they will look
at you with confusion and ask, "why would that be?"

You don't think Bush's failures had any effect on the 2004 elections?
I had good Republicans (no jokes please) voted out of office in my
blue state. I think people just went to the polls and voted straight
Democrat. I think people might do that again, for better and for worse.

Oh, definitely. But that was about getting Bush under control. This
wasn't so much a backlash against Bush as an attempt to steer policy
in a direction Bush wasn't willing to take it.

Bush will be out of office either way, so the reasoning that applied
before won't apply again. However, it's always possible that people
who never voted Democrat before the last election and did so in the
last election might do so again.
My point is basically that we're talking a very small number of
people. However, the margin in past Presidential elections has been
very small. It's not a mass movement, but perhaps it doesn't need to
be to swing the election.

The Elephant in the Room
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18505030/site/newsweek/
George W. Bush has the lowest presidential approval rating in a
generation, and the leading Dems beat every major '08 Republican.
Coincidence?
WEB EXCLUSIVE
By Marcus Mabry
Newsweek
Updated: 10:31 a.m. ET May 5, 2007
May 5, 2007 - It's hard to say which is worse news for Republicans:
that George W. Bush now has the worst approval rating of an American
president in a generation, or that he seems to be dragging every '08
Republican presidential candidate down with him. But According to the
new NEWSWEEK Poll, the public's approval of Bush has sunk to 28
percent, an all-time low for this president in our poll, and a point
lower than Gallup recorded for his father at Bush Sr.'s nadir. The
last president to be this unpopular was Jimmy Carter who also scored a
28 percent approval in 1979. This remarkably low rating seems to be
casting a dark shadow over the GOP's chances for victory in '08. The
NEWSWEEK Poll finds each of the leading Democratic contenders beating
the Republican frontrunners in head-to-head matchups.
