Two found guilty of Snowtown murders
After six days of deliberations, the jury has come back with its verdicts in
the notorious Snowtown 'bodies in the barrels' murder trial in Adelaide,
Australia.
John Justin Bunting, 36, has been found guilty of 11 counts of murder, and
Robert Joe Wagner, 31, guilty of seven counts of murder.
Bunting has received 11 life sentences.
Wagner has received seven life sentences plus three further life sentences
for murders which he had already pleaded guilty to.
After the verdicts were read Bunting and Wagner refused to stand and hear
their sentences when directed by the judge.
The charges relate to a seven-year period from 1992 to 1999.
In May 1999, police opened the vault door of a disused bank in the mid-north
town of Snowtown and found the remains of eight people in six plastic
barrels.
Soon they dug up the remains of two more in a suburban backyard.
During a marathon 11-month trial, the jury heard evidence from 227 witness
over 170 days.
The Snowtown trial is said to have cost South Australia some $15 million.
James Vlassakis, 23, is already serving life for four of the murders while
another accused, Mark Haydon, 44, is yet to stand trial.
