Object: OT: Royal Navy Satanists. Letters to the Times.
Two letters in the Times on this:
Sir, I fail to find your report newsworthy, as Satanists have been
serving in the Senior Service for many years.
In the past they were known as gunnery instructors.
***
Sir, In your report this morning a rating in HMS Cumberland is
described as the first member of the Royal Navy to register as a
Satanist. I hold the prior claim to that honour.
Serving in HMS Imperieuse in 1947, and frustrated to be retained for
so long after the end of the war, I filled in a routine form and wrote
"Satanist" in the space marked "religion". I was approached later that
day by the first lieutenant, who asked what special facilities I might
require for Sunday worship.

Fobidding worship of the devil but not other types of religion seems
to me to be much more silly than actually being a satanist. I don't
know who are the bigger idiots.
