OT: School sued over health risks of Wi-Fi radio signals |
From Slashdot:
Iphtashu Fitz writes "Both news.com and Wired are reporting that an
Illinois school district is being sued by parents over their use of a
Wi-Fi network at a local elementary school. Apparently the parents of 5
students are concerned about potential health risks to their children by
the Wi-Fi radio signals. The parents are seeking class-action status for
their suit, which seeks to halt the use of wireless networks but does not
ask for monetary damages. The complete complaint is also available for
your reading pleasure on wifinetnews.com." I would never have guessed that
the emissions from a wireless network are bad, unlike the healthy
emissions given off by the now inescapable cell phones that are everywhere
in public.
http://slashdot.org/
Of all the risks faced by elementary students these days, these parents
chose this?

<I am in the wireless industry so I might be a little biased>
I wonder if any of these people suing have microwave ovens, cordless
phones(the 2.4 GHz phones are the same freq as WiFi) flourescent lights,
TVs, computers, baby monitors, garage door openers, radio controlled toys
or cellphones??? There was a story(Nova IIRC) on EM radiation from power
lines a few years back. One expert said that worriying about power line
radiation is like being concerned about your cat breathing on the tree in
your yard during a hurricane. Referring to all the other sources of
radiation from man made to cosmic.

Not to mention broadcast radio & TV, and the magnetic fields created
by power lines in the walls. When I lived in my last apartment, we
couldn't use monitors in one bedroom because the power lines generated
a distorting magnetic field. Of course, the same people who would
worry about this wear magnet bracelets to cure arthritis...
We have a serious problem in this country (USA) regarding risk
assessment. This is part and parcel with our general scientific
illiteracy.
Parents are worried about violence in public schools, when the streets
are more violent. Vegetarians may be concerned about trace hormones in
meat, but eat a high-fat diet and don't execise.
I'm not saying that all of these worries are completely baseless, but
we need to get a grip^H^H^H^H sense of proportion here.

Yeah, because you can use magnets to align the non-polar fuel
molecules into a more efficient formation.

Go ahead and laugh.
You'd probably laugh at my over energy device to.
The next one will be on the market Real Soon Now. (Please send money)
I made the mistake of hooking the output to the input on the last model and
it melted before I could shut it down.
If you don't believe me I have the soldering iron I used to construct it and
the garbage can I put the melted parts in right here.
Hmmm, the mind wanders. I think I'll lay in a large supply of the old US
twenty dollar bills.
I'll sell three old bills for five new bills so people will not have to
worry about being tracked by the new security strip.
