It depends on what kind of society you mean.
Masons and others tend to have "secret" handshakes and the masons have both
a separate written "language" and an elaborate system of revealing what
level they are.
(Cleverly broken to a very high level by a very Irish Roman Catholic cop.)
My experience in the military leads me to believe that nobody who is really
in a secret society will talk about it.
We had a fenced in lit and guarded 24x7 area on the way to a training area.
Most of the staff were drafted and had the same opinion of the Army I did.
It was assumed there were nuclear warheads there being 20 minutes from the
border into the "bad" part of Germany.
*****, moan, gripe, drink, drank, drunk.
They *never* talked about what they did. No wise looks when asked, no clever
comments, they just did not talk about it.

I tend to agree with that assessment. At least if dealing with a
secret society worth belonging to.

That's understandable.
One thing that motivates me to learn more about "what is known" about
such groups is that I'd just like to know that they're not _all_ fake.
In my more "occultish" days, I very nearly fell in with the formation
of such a group, and could easily have fell in with any one of a
thousand others. But it wasn't "real", there was nothing "legitimate"
about _any_ of them. Particularly with the group I very nearly helped
form, the people involved - including myself - were only involved for
self-aggrandizement. Our motivations were purely ego-driven, our only
concern in bolstering our own self-importance. As that became clearer
and clearer to me, I found I could no longer be part of it. Because
it wasn't "true". We weren't even true to ourselves, let alone the
group. I might just as well have remained in church for all the more
"real" it was. Granted I'm still prone to some of the same vices
which repelled me from that group, but at least now I'm aware of them
and am both able and eager to stymie them somewhat.
I'm not interested in the Freemasons or the Rosicrucians or the
Knights Templars. I couldn't care less about the Blarneyists or the
inner sanctums of the Pope. And the stars only know how many
THOUSANDS of groups there are across the globe who think they are
"THE" 'Illuminati'. It's all just more ***** politics. Humans
have amazing potential if _only_ they would learn to _cooperate_ with
each other, and most of those groups as I know them do anything _but_
cooperate.
Maybe that's what I'm looking for in seeking to learn about such
groups - a human society that actually manages to "get it right", so
to speak. I've come so close to seeing it a few times, but then
always, always, always, _ego_ staggers out onto the path and just
ruins >everything<. Is there _no_ place on Earth where people
actually know how to get along, even if it goes against their
instincts? In societies such as those I ponder, they'd _have_ to.

True, but.... (and how I love the word "but" - but that's another
story....).
The big problem for "proper" secret societies is recruiting new
members at least with respect to maintaining secrecy if the
prospective says "no".
What you tend to find is "outer" and "inner" orders, ah, groups. That
is to say you'll have on ostensibly semi-public group, like the Masons
for example, which have "inner circles" which one may be invited to
join after ones measure has been taken, perhaps over a period of years
during standard membership.
This isn't necessarily terribly sinister in as much as people with
similar mind sets and takes on the object of interest tend to
gravitate together.
But that said, most "secret" societies are "secret" because nobody
gives a damn.

Now, I wasn't talking about a run-of-the-mill _DATE_, for crying out
loud...
Or do you mean the all-powerful, world-spanning Illuminati and their

Well, sort of, only fnordthe one's I'm talking about would actually
have to existfnord. :-)
Thinking of joining one?
Nah. The kind I'm thinking of probably wouldn't have me. Not so much
because of any character flaw (though possibly in _addition_ to
character flaws) so much as the fact that the kind I'm thinking of
probably wouldn't take _anyone_ who actively seeks them out. People
actively seeking out such things often have an agenda all their own,
and couldn't be trusted to sync with the agenda of the group.
My primary interest in such groups is the same as what's caused me to
so thoroughly shed all pretense of religion - _my_ "personal agenda",
so to speak: I want to know the truth. The truth, the whole truth,
and nothing but the truth. Even if I'd hate it, could do nothing to
change it or tell anyone about it, I want to know it just the same.
But when it comes to subjects like this, there really is no way to
know for sure. So what have I got to lose? Might as well just _ask_.

Not necessarily. I'm not up on modern cabals, but historically there
were some that wouldn't talk to folks who didn't have the initiative to
look for them.

Are you familiar with the Yale group called Skull and Bones? I
believe that would fit the description of the sort of secret society
you're interested in.

The secret: details of their membership in Skull and Bones, the elite
Yale University society whose members include some of the most powerful
men of the 20th century.
Bonesmen, as they're called, are forbidden to reveal what goes on in
their inner sanctum, the windowless building on the Yale campus that is
called the Tomb
