Object: OT: Security check
Today I had to go to the post office, and I already know to
leave my pager, cell phone and one set of keys behind so all I have to
do is pull out the main keys and pocket change. However, today, after
I did this and walked through the metal detector which *did not buzz*
they asked me for my jacket and belt!! They ran that thru the x-ray.
On my way out, I asked the main security man "what's up with the
jacket and belt?" He said it's been that way 5 years. I restrained
myself from profanity, said I've been coming there for years, and this
is the first time I had to do the jacket and belt. He said "Don't say
that" I said "really, this IS the first time with the belt, at least"
- I may not have had the jacket last time - he said "must have been an
oversight."
I had to leave because I felt my blood warming up (that's a danger
signal for me) and I'm allergic to jail. I left muttering "who the
hell voted for this guy!!" Others agreed.
Google on "paranoid schizophrenia" and you'll come up with a symptom
list that fits Dubya and his cabinet quite well.

Where the heck is this? There are no security checks at any post
offices around here. The only thing they do is refuse to take letters
over the counter without a return address. You have to put them in
the slot around the corner.

OK, but that has nothing to do with the Post Office then. It has to
do with it being the Federal Building.

Yeah, that is weird. There certainly aren't any metal detectors in any of
my local post offices.

I forgot to mention this one was in a federal building. It's not the
walk thru the metal detector that bothers me so much, it's the sudden
escalation to the jacket and belt routine.
Is it a prelude to a sort of universal government issued "pass" that
would look tempting to the gullible to allow them the "privilege" of
freedom once they provide all their personal data?
Lots of people would actually *pay* for one. I bet they didn't vote
for Kerry.
Bush doesn't have to worry about getting reelected. And he's got four
more years of now unrestricted rule. THAT worries me.
Check out the symptoms of paranoia again.

In some post offices we (Maine) have those things that are
supposed to stop shoplifters. I regularly set them off with
tagged library books. No emptying of pockets and such like,
though.

In New Haven CT the Post Office is in a federal building. I don't mind
the magnetometer, but the jacket and belt?
