Object: OT: Shake Rattle & Roll
A magnitude 5.3 quake just hit SoCal east of Los Angeles maybe 10 minutes
ago. The first jolt was pretty big, but it cooled down immediately. I
was about to dive under my desk. There will probably be some cans on the
floor in local stores, but nothing came off the shelves here.
That's three mentionables in two weeks. Yikes.

The one that had me worried was the magnitude 7 off the coast of northern
Cal a few days ago. They interrupted TV shows to broadcast a tsunami
warning, giving an arrival time of 9:23 pm.

Yeah, I have friends who live on Coronado. It's pretty much a sand bar
with only two ways off. One is the San Diego Bay bridge, and the other
is the Silver Strand, a *very* long, *very* narrow, *very* low strip if
sand with a two lane road on top. I don't think Coronado is anywhere
more than 12 feet above sea level, and it would take a day at least to
evacuate.

Look at them as pressure relievers. As long as you keep getting these
moderate-sized ones, you're less likely to get the big one.
BTW, I have no idea if that is scientifically sound or not, and
frankly, I don't want to know. I also live in an earthquake zone (a
couple thousand miles north of you) and this is how I think of it. It
helps me sleep at night and if I'm deceiving myself, well, at least I'm
not drinking wine and thinking it's blood.

Yes you do -- because *you're right*!
You can even deduce this from an imaginary 'limiting case' where the
movement of the plates at the boundary is *smooth and continuous* -- and
where, as a result, nothing of any danger could possibly occur...

If you think earthquakes are something to 'yikes' about, wait 'til your
judgment day.

So tell us: what do you think 'Padre Pio' has in store for him on *his*
'judgement day'...?
-------
"Indeed, Padre Pio's reputation over the decades has -- even in many
official church quarters -- been that of a womanizer, fraud, and mentally
ill huckster who claimed extraordinary paranormal powers. The padre was
investigated by the Holy Office over a dozen times, and at one point banned
from celebrating the Mass in public, receiving visitors, or talking to women
alone. Correspondent John Allen of the National Catholic Reporter newspaper
recently wrote, "The whispered consensus on Padre Pio in the halls of the
Vatican was that he was at best a naive hysteric, at worst a con man.""
"Over the years, investigations even by church officials led to charges that
Pio faked miracles and had sex with women in the confessional box. Many felt
that the friar caused the stigmata by burning his skin with nitric acid, and
used a perfume to create what his credulous followers described as a
pervasive "odor of sanctity" that was said to surround Pio. A report by
journalist Paul Vallely of the New Zealand Herald newspaper says that Pope
John XXIII, suspicious of Pio's cult-like popularity, authorized the bugging
of his confessional. And the founder of Rome's Catholic University Hospital
concluded that Friar Pio was "an ignorant and self-mutilating psychopath who
exploited people's credulity.""
"In 1960, Monsignore Carlo Maccari concluded an investigation ordered by
Pope John XXIII. "The 200-page report he compiled," notes the National
Catholic Reporter, "though never published in full, is said to be
devastatingly critical. Vatican gossip long had it that the 'Maccari
dossier' was an insuperable obstacle to Padre Pio's sainthood.""
"One entry in the file reported that Padre Pio engaged in sexual activities
twice a week with female penitents, "his in hebdomada copulabat *****
muliere...""
"In 1992, Italian physician and theologian Agostino Gemelli, who specialized
in the investigation of stigmata cases for the Vatican, said that Padre Pio
was a "hysteric" who inflicted the wounds upon himself."

A magnitude 5.3 quake just hit SoCal east of Los Angeles maybe 10 minutes

That's three mentionables in two weeks. Yikes.

I was in California (Northridge, to be specific) on a business trip last
week and felt it. It was my first earthquake. By the time I realized
what was going on, it was over. It felt to me like I was on the upper
floor of a building in a high wind or on some kind of balcony structure
that wasn't solid enough to not move when people walk around. But then,
I remembered that I was on the ground floor of a new, solid building. I
had to go check with some co-workers to confirm that it had been an
earthquake rather than some odd attack of dizziness that only I experienced.

Exactly. It's like the ground becomes liquid and the room you are in is
now a cabin on a cruise ship. You should have felt Northridge in 1994.
It was a 6.7. I couldn't believe my house was still standing.

I haven't been on a cruise ship... yet. Ask me about a comparison next
month (I'm leaving for an Alaskan cruise on Wednesday). The quake didn't
really feel like the movement of a smaller boat to me, but it's been a
while since I've been on any boat.
I bet the Northridge quake in 1994 was a totally different experience!
(One that I'd prefer to miss.) My brother-in-law lives in Burbank and I
think the little cabin he lives in moved around on its foundation. I
think they did something to fasten it down more firmly afterwards.

(chuckling) What's interesting is being in the center of a guided
missile destroyer having just come out of the chow line and looking
for an open space to sit and feeling the start of a large wave. I
turned to face forward (right on the centerline) planted both feet
shoulder width, relaxed the knees and elbows-tray in hands. My boots
broke lock and I slid some twenty feet to impact the bulkhead. I
don't recall spilling anything.

I was at Stanford watching my brother-in-law's football team play
Stanford one week before the earthquake that collapsed the top roadway
onto the one below it.
About eleven years ago, S. Oregon had two separate quakes (two
separate faultlines) four hours apart. For a couple months afterward
the frequent aftershocks reminded me of being a passenger on a train.
