Object: OT: Sixties Music Trivia Question: "Freak Flag"
I was just listening to Jimi Hendrix's song "If 6 was 9" and there's a
point in the lyrics where he says "I'm gonna wave my freak flag high,
HIGH!"
And I noticed that this is kind of similar to the Crosby, Stills, Nash
and Young song "Almost Cut my Hair" where he says "I feel like letting
my freak flag fly."
My question is: what is a freak flag? I got the impression from the
CSNY song that it meant long hair being prominently displayed as a
badge of freakiness, like waving a flag, but not really sure if it
means the same thing in the Hendrix song.
Also, are there any other Sixties songs that mention a freak flag?
Thanks,
--Sean C

I had always thought the same thing. I do remember the older kids
calling it that (I was 8yr old in 1970). I found one scholar's article
on it:

I can't recall any other songs. Strange, it sure seems like something
John Fogarty would have said..<g>
